I advise anyone reading this NOT to buy any product from the American Water Heater Company.
A water heater will typically last 10 to 12 years. I just got a new one 6 months ago. One made by AWH. It no longer works. The pilot light will not stay lit.
These things happen. I wasn't too upset about it. It's still under warranty (a 10 year warranty). But I discovered some unpleasant things about AWH:
1) If you call them, you get a call center in India.
2) The pilot light issue is a design flaw prevalent in all of those models. Thousands of people all over have the same problem as me.
3) AWH will send a kit to fix the problem. You have to pay for shipping on the kit, and you have to pay a plumber to install it. By all accounts, the kit will solve the problem for about 3 weeks, then the problem will return.
4) AWH refuses to replace any of the defective heaters.
5) A large class-action lawsuit is in progress against them about this very issue.
It doesn't bother me that the heater died. It doesn't bother me that it has a critical design flaw. What bothers me is that AWH is not honoring their warranties.
So the end result is that I will by buying a new water heater, at my own expense. And having it installed, at my own expense. All this just 6 months after having a new one installed. To say that I'm mad is a massive understatement.
So please don't buy from them. Also, research any heater you do buy, because a number of brands are actually made by AWH. Whirlpool, for instance.
