Hey why not, I mean Stalin did it right?
Well it's time to get my feet wet in the kiddie pool of politics. Todays exercise, the Southern Border (or lack thereof), and what I think would be the best way to approach it. What every seems to want to do is put the military out there, since we have them "policing" (I am using this word rather liberally) Iraq, why not our own Border right? Well at this point Mr. Trebek will have to break the news to you that you're incorrect. Why? Well I'll drop my two cents in the "give a penny, take a penny" bowl and explain.
First off, we are not policing Iraq. Last time I checked where are still trying to kill these "insurgents", now if we could bomb those damn mosques. The military is trained and armed to handle warfare, not policing our own civilians. When is the last time you saw the PD bombing a crack house with a 20,000lb bunker bomb? Let's not forget the fact the military is also stretched out between Iraq, Afghan and keeping all are air fields and forts up and running. Now you want to send them to the border and stetch the military out even more? DoD would shit themselves if they were told to deploy 2,000 infranty to the border. Another big issue, is that the use of the military in this sense would erode away at whatever's left of our democracy. What's to stop a president from using the miltary to handle a riot? "Well we used it for the border and that was less of a threat then this riot, so why not?"
"But Shane O, weren't the the National Guard sent to those southern schools back in the day to protect those black students?"
Why yes they were, that would have been the job of the police if they weren't racial bigots themselves. The border is not a racism issue, merely an undermanning issue. Hey here's a crazy idea, lets increase the size of the border patrol, properly fund them and stop giving ILLEGAL aliens rights. Now there is a crazy idea, yea it just might work.
