Generally, I think the younger you are the more age difference stands out (as in, no one bats an eyelash at an 88 year old dating a 78 year old, but a 28 year old dating a 18 year old is seen as sketchy sketch.)
The biggest thing about age difference is to me is that you and your partner are at different points in your life (for instance, starting out in a job versus moving through the company or being in college v. wanting to move for a new job v. even still being in high school) There can be conflicting interests (but aren't there always!) and it can be hard for the younger person to feel equal to the older person because they just aren't there yet. I think couples have to find a good balance, you know?
Anyway, if two people feel like they have a lot in common and like each other, I mean that's most of the battle right there. Now, me being me, I don't think I'd date someone a lot older than me. That's because I'm still in college and don't have any idea what I want with my life. I don't need a 30 year old who wants to have kids and settle down because I'm so not there yet, but I don't want a 30 year old who doesn't want to settle down at all--I want to have kids someday, just not yet, you know? I think that's why most people tend to stick with people their own age. It's just easier. Most people my age are hey, exactly like me. That's kind of handy.
*long winded post is long winded and redundant and hopefully a bit helpful?*
