Congenital, when an opening fail to close after birth. May be acquired after birth due to obesity, muscle weakness, surgery or illness.
Abnormal protrusion of organ or tissue out of the normal structure containing it.
Usually occurs in abdominal cavity.
1. Scrotal hernia - An exaggeration of inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernia that has reached scrotum. Severe abdominal pain and acute local swelling. In large animal, the tightened spermatic cord can be felt pass through inguinal canal.
2. Inguinal hernia - Protrusion of intestine into an opening between deep epigastric artery and the edge or rectus muscle. Involves internal inguinal ring and passes inguinal canal.
3. Diaphragmatic hernia: When diaphragm ruptures (after a high fall etc), organs of abdominal cavity moved to thoracic cavity (liver, stomach etc)
4. Umbilical hernia: Protrusion of intestine through abdominal wall under the skin at umbilicus.
5. Traumatic hernia: Protrusion of abdominal viscera to the subcutaneous area after traumatic injury to abdominal muscles.
