At times during gardening I can feel like a terrible person. How can I rip out a weed without disturbing the sleeping place of a June beetle. How can I not feel pity as scores upon scores of potato bugs scurry away in fear from the ground I tear up. And the worms left out in the sun to dry as I stick a shovel deep in the ground in a vain attempt to remove a buckthorn from the soil...roots and all.
All the little makers* removed from their homes.
I've decided not to rotatill. I'm making progress. I'm breaking the garden into four or five...or six segments. I then clear out all the weeds in that section. Tomorrow I will take the hoe to the ground and till the soil...planting lettuce. Next comes the radishes, carrots, and parsnips. After a third section is cleared and tilled* I can finally plant my potatoes. Then comes the tomatoes followed by the peppers. Obviously I don't intend to plant the potatoes and tomatoes close to each other. The two are related* and this increases the chance of some type of disease. Then again the instructions on the bag of potatoes are kinda picky. Who the heck checks for soil acidity?
Regardless, I hope the garden will be ready by Wednesday.
