in Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels, everyone owned a little device called a comlog (usually worn as a bracelet). the comlog was your ID. It was used to pay for things (like a debit card). it recorded what happened around it. it was a person's anytime access to the internet. it provided communication with other people with comlogs, with sound and video
