in Dan Simmons' Hyperion novels, everyone owned a little device called a comlog (usually worn as a bracelet). the comlog was your ID. It was used to pay for things (like a debit card). it recorded what happened around it. it was a person's anytime access to the internet. it provided communication with other people with comlogs, with sound and video. it was all the data storage a person could need; and what couldn't be stored on the comlog could always be accessed through it. it was the all-in-one gadget, the only thing you ever needed to carry.
our cell phones are getting that way. they provide instantaneous communication, wherever you are. they link to the internet (and are already moving up to broadband quality). you can e-mail, chat, browse, buy things. they're planners and datebooks, cameras, video games, even flashlights.
it's just cool to watch sci-fi become reality.
