...Also, I am so totally loving The Making of Modern Japan by Marius B. Jansen. I was halfway tempted to fault it for insufficient Hideyoshi, but the focus is on what happened in the Tokugawa period and after, not on the Muromachi, so I think I can live with that. Certainly I can't fault it for insufficient Ieyasu. What I hadn't realized was how little I knew about Japanese history, and how little hope I feel I have of understanding it--at least right now.
On the other hand I once felt this way about Rome too and I can at least rattle off a few things now. But Rome is a cultural paradigm that I know well and can deal with because so much of it, here in the West, was never truly lost. I grew up with imperial Rome in a way that I did not grow up with feudal and Tokugawa Japan. Japan is another thing altogether, and while I think it can be understood I am not sure that it can be understood by me, which automatically turns it into a lovely challenge and a huge intellectual playground.
So maybe I'd better call a halt on the projected samurai game until I know some more. But learning, and trying to condense it to make it explainable, will be half the fun.
