Geeky List Of Epoch Love

General notes:

1.) Stuff I know means that I've spent a lot of time and effort studying this period to great extent, and I can tell you what people ate for breakfast. Although I don't mean to, I can get really obnoxious about this, so tell me if I do, okay? I'm happy to teach or point you in the direction of resources, but I don't want to consistently annoy anyone.

2.) Stuff I can wing means that I know enough about this period to avoid major, egregious errors; I probably know dates and major players, but might be lost on the minutiae of everyday life.

3.) Stuff I am not very familiar with means that I am familiar with the barest outline of this period, but I cannot vouch for any kind of accuracy in big ways or little. Most of what I "know" about this period probably comes from fiction, which means I need to read some real history and correct this.

4.) If you don't see your period here, it means I know nothing (or next to nothing) about it, and I will probably mess it up horribly unless I do some research.

5.) I ♥ research! I'm willing to learn about a period not listed; just tell me what it is. If you know of a couple good books or URLs, pass 'em my way. ^_^

Anyway, on with the "fun"!

I know the ancient world at all periods, which includes Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Persian Empire, Greece, Macedon, and Rome. If you want to include the Celts in this, we can say that I can wing Celtic history as well (outside the British Isles, it's dicey for me). I am a classicist and ancient historian by training, so I am likely to be more familiar with Greece and Rome, but I'm equally comfortable with all these places.

I can wing large chunks of the medieval world and the Renaissance, especially Tudor and Stuart England. Also I can wing the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. I am not very familiar with the eighteenth century in Europe. I know Victorian/Edwardian and later nineteenth-century England and France; I also know Victorian/Edwardian America. I am not very familiar with the British Raj, although it is an interest and I'm always reading more about it. I can wing the 1920s and 1930s in the States. I know late Tsarist and early Soviet Russia.

After about the 1940s, I get fuzzy.

As for non-Western history:

I know Muromachi and Tokugawa Japan, the latter better than the former. (This, to me, is not ancient Japan; you wouldn't call England in 1575 "ancient". "Ancient" Japan, to me, is the Japan described in the Kojiki. Sorry, pet peeve. Done pontificating now.)

I am not very familiar with the Arab world at any time. Also I am not very familiar with any period of Chinese history. I am woefully ignorant.

Hopefully that answers any questions you might have had.
