Weekend and upcoming cultural events

Aug 13, 2007 07:58

I had  a nice, laid-back weekend, lots of good sleep and food, even a trip to the gym.

I went to the old neighborhood with my friend Mike for dinner Friday, at Capriccio on Vemont, always a reliable place.  I got the pork loin and overate.  Saturrday I expected a visit from another friend Mike, but he hurt his leg.  I surprised myself and went to the bars on Saturday night, to Bear Bar and later Pistons.   Bear Bar is mobbed, and boy is it hot.

Sunday was to be a laundry day, but I went shopping at Amoeba with a buddy and hung out.

As for chores, my room still looks like the basement in "Citizen Kane'" (there's a photo somewhere but I'm ashamed to post it).

Busy week coming up in music
There's lots of great music coming up- if anyone would like to join me, they can respond here or by e-mail/phone.

  • Patti Smith Group at Santa Monica Pier (yes, free, if you don't count traffic and parking problems).  I'm hearing great things about her latest tour (e.g., the Sound Advice guys on the radio who saw her at Lollapalooza).  Thursday night
  • Sunset Junction Street Fair  How many of my favorite groups can they fit in two days?
    • 70's soul is represeented by the O'Jay's, Deniece Williams and The Emotions.  For singing, great arrangements and just great records, these groups have given me many weeks of happy listening.  Just wait til you hear me singing "Free" at karaoke (j/k it's not possible).  Mis-steps like "Hear it for the Boy" and "Too Much, Too Little" are not Niecy's fault.  The O'Jay's never made a mis-step, and they are in the odd position of carrying on the memory of Gerald Levert, Eddie's son.
    • arthur Adams and Millie Jackson are can't miss acts.
    • Morris Day and the Time must still be great.
    • Punk is represented by the NY Dolls and the Buzzcocks.  I hear they're both doing great.  Can't wait.
    • Sea Wolf and Ben Harper are on Saturday.
    • In other genres, Vilma Diaz is billed as the voice of Sonora Dinamita, the great poppy Colombian cumbia group.  Dinamita runs through great female singers fast, my favorites left in the mid-90's, so I'm not sure about this one (but anyone who can do "Amor de mis amores" with full band has to be hot).
  • Cecilia Noel and the Wild Clams  Cecilia is an awesome performer, I haven't seen her since about 2000.  Sometimes my old friend (okay, acquaintance, we were in hte same latin percussion class for 2 years) Toni Basil plays cowbell.  This is hot pop salsa with lots of cool innuendo- hey, this group sells condoms on their website embossed with their name and logo.  It's next week for free at Skirball Cultural Center, and I want a carpool because parking is 10 bucks if I don't have a couple of people with me. Plus it'll be more fun.

Sunset Junction has more acts that I want to see than Bumbershooot, which by the way I also will be attending.  I haven't mentioned it here, but the impending fatherhood of my old high school buddy (yes, straight) is an excuse to get to Seattle over Labor Day.
