The new diet plan is working well. I've definitely been more energetic and awake and able to focus these last few weeks. The headaches were mostly from Caffeine withdrawal I'm sure. I haven't even had a soda or cup of tea in the whole time. I'm only about 50% on the diet. I have still been putting cheap pancake syrup on my partly wheat based pancakes, and drinking soy milk with my normal cereal. Oh, and I've had a few cheese pizzas and some eggs and hash browns breakfasts. But I'm making an effort at every meal to eat more fruits, veggies, nuts, and whole grains. And I think it's been paying off well.
It's hard to follow some of the recipes exactly when they call for things like grated beet, or fresh basil. I can't even find fresh basil around here. And when I go to the city to do shopping, it's only in those little plastic packages for a couple dollars for maybe one serving based on the diet's portions. By far the most expensive thing in the diet is the hemp seeds. They are about $20 a pound. And while that isn't a big deal when only using a tablespoon here and there, the recipes often call for half a cup or a cup. To make one quart of hemp milk (delicious actually) takes a cup of hemp seeds. I figure the cost at about $3 a quart. Compare this to about $0.30 a quart for soy milk made at home. Considering that a quart lasts me about 5 days, $3 isn't a big deal by itself. And if it contributes significantly to my health, it's probably worth it. But it all adds up.
I spent about $400 on my first shopping trip to build my base stock of nuts, beans, grains herbs and spices and the initial stock of fresh produce. Since then, it's been only about $30 a week. And my initial stock of the more non-perishable stuff is lasting pretty well. So that's not bad at all. I'm going to the city again in a little while to resupply on pet food and better quality produce.
I did an hour of yoga for the first time in a couple weeks again today. It was hard. I'm getting out of shape again. No exercise at all for weeks and I could feel it. My belt size hasn't changed at all in years, but my gut is a little bigger and it actually gets in the way of some of the more closed up yoga postures. My normal breathing seems to be affected as well. I think I have mild sleep apnea. Staying in shape gets much harder as you get older.
Of course, for this part of rural america I look thin. Obesity is the norm around here.
Time to make my grocery list and head out.
