Here is the outline for Downfall and some snippets that I had written for the remaining four chapters. And wow, I actually did research on military tribunals and stuff, what the hell.
Title: Downfall
Disclaimer: Don’t own ‘em.
Rating: R - dark
Spoilers: through season 2.5
Warnings: torture (not graphic--think Flesh and Bone), sexual assault (that I never actually wrote)
Summary: What if Adama had gone through with the assassination plot? And the Pegasus Marines didn’t just shoot Kara dead? (I have logic, I swear)
The Colonial Fleet tears itself apart over Kara Thrace’s humanity.
Outline:
I.
A) Kara kills Cain.
B) Fisk takes Command of Pegasus.
C) Roslin appoints Adama Admiral.
D) Lee sees Kara in the brig.
II.
A) Helo and Tyrol return to Galactica (time for a Helo POV!).
B) Lee and Adama have their first big fight over Kara and the assassination plot and what to do now.
C) Baltar will run the Cylon test on Kara and Head!Six tells him to say she’s human.
D) Lee tries to visit Kara, but the guards don’t let him in because she’s being interrogated (by Kendra!). When he does see her she’s really beat up and Lee wants to do something, tries to get his dad to do something.
III.
A) Kendra’s daily interrogations continue.
B) Adama’s increasingly tense, as is Lee. Adama’s torn between Kara’s welfare and the fleet (again) because he can extract her by force or he can admit to the assassination plot. Either way would tear the fleet apart. Lee wants to break her out but has no connections on Pegasus.
Adama (to Lee): I understand you have some experience with breaking high-profile prisoners out of the brig.
C) First attack-Kara fights back. Deemed too dangerous. Lee not allowed in, but can see her and can see that she needs medical attention. Finds out what happened, manages to get Cottle in to see her. Is perversely relieved to see her fighting back at least. Cottle is furious, demands to see the Commander, but instead is sent to the XO who naturally promises ignorance and action.
IV.
A) Lee starts “guarding” her whenever he’s off shift, running himself ragged. Kara’s very non-communicative during this period. Lee keeps leaving the comm phone off the hook in the hopes that she’ll talk or listen. (penultimate visit-“work a little faster” exchange. Ultimate visit-she hangs up the phone)
B) Adama’s feeling the pressure on all sides. Laura’s dying.
C) Helo’s aware of the situation (via Lee) and wants to help.
D) Lee wants to break her out.
E) Baltar saves Laura.
F) Lee launches his break-out attempt.
V.
A) Lee fails. Imprisoned in a separate holding area. He’s freaking out, afraid he’s made things worse, especially since no one will be able to watch over Kara now.
B) Kara’s afraid for Lee when she realizes what’s happened. Sort of comes out of her fugue-ish state, and is afraid for herself too. Afraid to close her eyes.
C) Fisk and Adama are REALLY butting heads now. Fisk feeling more and more like he understands Cain and wishes he had her steel.
D) What’s Laura doing/thinking at this point?
E) Baltar volunteers to take over Kara’s interrogation. Adama is amenable to the suggestion, and Fisk doesn’t have a solid reason to protest.
VI.
A) Baltar is in. Six pleased by his actions? Making strategic alliances. “This,” she paused, “alliance between the Pegasus and the Galactica will not last for long. Best to be sure that when it goes, the Adamas will owe you a favor or two.”
B) Kara gets a reprieve.
C) Kendra (?) points out to Fisk that Gina escaped on Baltar’s watch. Fisk gives her free reign over the prisoner situation.
D) When Adama finds out that Fisk/Kendra have gone back on their agreement to let Baltar run the interrogations (have gone under his nose here and against his direct orders), he realizes that he has a militarily legitimate reason to remove Fisk from power...
VII.
A) Meanwhile Cottle has finally gotten through to Fisk, who sees Kara’s condition with his own eyes and tries to have Shaw arrested-but she’s stronger than him and she has the respect (and fear) of the crew. Fisk is tired, and willing for this whole thing to be over, but Shaw is not.
B) In ensuing chaos, Pegasus pilot(s) (Showboat?) in a surprise move sneaks Lee out of the brig. Helps him get to Kara. The two of them find a moment of peace while everything around them goes to hell?
C) Can Kara have found some way to break herself out? Maybe she stole something when Baltar was in to see her, or Cottle even.
D) End on the two of them flying?
Questions: How does a court-martial work? Who is it comprised of? Would Fisk be in charge, since it took place on Pegasus, or Admiral Adama since he outranks Fisk?
Does Kara’s trial, such as it is, need to be a part of this story? If so, does her escape need to be immediately following the verdict...or immediately preceding it?
What can serve as the impetus for the Sunshine Boys attacking Kara? Why are they even called that? I don’t remember their names.
Part Three
Passage of narration as Kendra’s daily interrogations continue.
...
must break up the “took my clothes” scene-Lee’s on the outside, maybe at the end of the scene she finally says that one line.
First attack-Kara fights back.
[the following exchange should be, according to my outline, a later scene]
“I’m working as fast as I can to get you out of here.” Lee couldn’t look at her face, couldn’t watch her looking away from him, so he stared at the space between their hands and counted each breath. She didn’t move except for the steady motion of her inhaling and exhaling. He stayed with her until the marine guards outside her cell signaled shift change through the clear barrier, and he knew Stinger would have his hide if he was late. Lee sighed and rose stiffly to his feet, finally glancing at Kara’s face only to see that her eyes were closed. He hoped she had fallen asleep, although she couldn’t be comfortable sitting up against the wall like that. But he knew she was tired.
He was almost to the exit when her voice called him back.
“Hey, Lee?”
He turned around and stared at her, unable to speak as he tried to swallow around the lump in his throat. He nodded.
“Could you work a little faster?”

(Part Four)
Gaius looked at the battered woman before him and remembered her scent, her gasps, the feel of her legs, her belly, her breasts, her nails digging into his shoulder. Remembered how he once thought she was a rare catch, a woman of flesh and blood behind a steely exterior with ten-foot walls and barbed wire.
Now he looked at her and wondered how many men had known her the way he had. Wondered if she closed her eyes, if she cried, if she came...whose name she called.
He watched the abused creature curl further into herself and, for the first time in his life, Gaius Baltar knew guilt.
Part Four
Lee starts “guarding” her whenever he’s off shift, running himself ragged. Kara’s very non-communicative during this period. Lee keeps leaving the comm phone off the hook in the hopes that she’ll talk or listen. (penultimate visit-“work a little faster” exchange. Ultimate visit-she hangs up the phone)
Adama’s feeling the pressure on all sides. Laura’s dying.
Helo’s aware of the situation (via Lee) and wants to help.
Lee wants to break her out.
Baltar saves Laura.
Lee launches his break-out attempt.
Part Five:
Lee fails. Imprisoned in a separate holding area. He’s freaking out, afraid he’s made things worse, especially since no one will be able to watch over Kara now.
Kara’s afraid for Lee when she realizes what’s happened. Sort of comes out of her fugue-ish state, and is afraid for herself too. Afraid to close her eyes.
Fisk and Adama are REALLY butting heads now. Fisk feeling more and more like he understands Cain and wishes he had her steel.
What’s Laura doing/thinking at this point?
Baltar volunteers to take over Kara’s interrogation. Adama is amenable to the suggestion, and Fisk doesn’t have a solid reason to protest.
Part Six:
Baltar is in. Six pleased by his actions? Making strategic alliances. “This,” she paused, “alliance between the Pegasus and the Galactica will not last for long. Best to be sure that when it goes, the Adamas will owe you a favor or two.”
Kara gets a reprieve.
Kendra (?) points out to Fisk that Gina escaped on Baltar’s watch. Fisk gives her free reign over the prisoner situation.
When Adama finds out that Fisk/Kendra have gone back on their agreement to let Baltar run the interrogations (have gone under his nose here and against his direct orders), he realizes that he has a militarily legitimate reason to remove Fisk from power...
Part Seven:
Meanwhile Cottle has finally gotten through to Fisk, who sees Kara’s condition with his own eyes and tries to have Shaw arrested-but she’s stronger than him and she has the respect (and fear) of the crew.
In ensuing chaos, Pegasus pilot(s) (Showboat?) in a surprise move sneaks Lee out of the brig. Helps him get to Kara. The two of them find a moment of peace while everything around them goes to hell? Can Kara have found some way to break herself out? Maybe she stole something when Baltar was in to see her, or Cottle even.
“Let’s run away,” Lee said. No response. “I’ll even let you pick the music.”
Still nothing.
Then a sigh, and a bit of a gasp, and-
“I’m packed.” She didn’t look at him, didn’t even turn her head in his direction, but he could see the movement of her mouth around the simple sentence, and he took heart in the gentle curve of her lips.
He stood and offered her his hand.
She took it.
(that would most likely be the end)
