Let's Go Dodgers. Don't blow it this year (again).
Trailer for Pacific Rim: Uprising. AWW YISS!
Lin-Manuel Miranda gathers Puerto Rican artists for a song benefiting Puerto Rico hurricane relief.
I saw Hamilton at the Pantages on on September 19th with my mother. It was a-mah-zing and well worth all the wait. Traffic wasn’t too bad and we even had a few extra minutes to buy a little something to eat at the market on 3rd and La Brea (where his older gentleman asked me if I thought about modeling. Though I wonder if the address he gave me was to his house or something :-O ::tries to remember the address he gave, googles it:: Oh, well actually, he was being straight up, that is a legitimate casting agency, haha, sorry dude). Center mezzanine is pretty much the only section I'll sit in at the Pantages, and this time we were in the fifth row on the aisle (I've got third row center mezzanine on the aisle for Disney’s Aladdin in January, woo, I wanna see a magic carpet ride!). Good view of the stage in a full house. Even the seats in the last row in the corner were taken. Before the show, I bought both styles of fridge magnet and a tour cast program (two must-buys for me at every musical), and we still had to wait for the inner doors to open.
First and foremost, Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr was a revelation. HE TORE IT UP. The things he does with that voice. Incredible. Such power and clarity and where he places the notes. Wow. And he is so athletic. He was the main draw for me, cast-wise, and he exceeded expectations. I love all Burrs, but Joshua is my very favorite. Thankfully, I was able to tell him how phenomenal he was at the stage door afterwards, and I got a picture and signature on my Playbill, too. I also wanted to wish him luck in Carousel, the revival of which
he will star in next year on Broadway (and if the Tony voters know what’s good for them, he should be nominated for Best Actor in a Musical for playing Billy Bigelow next year, as well. I can already hear him singing “Soliloquy,” oh my goodness) and compliment him on his HamJam remixes, but after I told him how awesome his performance was, I got caught up in the picture-taking and plum forgot. Ah well.
I didn’t cry during “Dear Theodosia,” but it was a near thing. I did get chills during his amazing and unique riffs at the climax of “
Wait for It.”
We actually had the Tuesday understudy for Michael Luwoye, Ryan Alvarado. Ryan was great. Reminded me quite a bit of LMM, more rapping and sing-talking than straight singing, while I know Michael can SAAANG. Very nice guy, as well. I told Ryan that he had excellent diction (because he did. Even if he was rapping quickly, I heard every word loud and clear), which he was flattered by. Perhaps I'll try my hand at the lottery to be able to see Michael's performance. Also, Ryan’s girlfriend was adorable. I found out later that they both had roles on In the Heights together at some point.
Emmy Raver-Lampman was a perfect, fantastic Angelica. She didn’t overact, and she could sing quietly and belt equally well. Her voice is clear and strong. She never sounded out of breath during “
Satisfied,” which is a feat of stratospheric skill, and makes it sound easy to sing, which isn’t fair at all. Love love loved her. She may just be my fave Angelica, too. None of the ladies came to the stage door, which was a bummer, but I'm sure not everyone comes out every night.
During intermission, my mom said Solea Pfeiffer was an angel, and she was absolutely right. Angelic voice and countenance. A most beautiful and effortless Eliza, gentle but with a spine of steel. Her “That Would Be Enough” was so gorgeous, and her riffs during “
Helpless,” ooohhhh mmmyyy! She rivals Philippa in our eyes.
Amber Iman was Peggy/Maria Reynolds. Her Peggy was good, but her Maria was great. So much control in her voice.
Ruben J. Carbajal as Laurens was one of the big surprises for me. I wasn’t expecting that voice. Wow wow wow. I gushed at him embarrassingly about his performance afterwards, but he didn’t mind. And he’s a homey, went to Cal State Fullerton and wore a Dodger hat.
The other big surprise was Desmond Newson, the understudy for Lafayette/Jefferson. I forgot who the regular Lafayette/Jefferson was, so I didn’t realize Desmond was the understudy until after the show. After hearing audio with the regular actor in these roles on the Angelica tour, I gotta say I prefer Desmond overall (sorry Jordan). Desmond’s Lafayette is good, but his Jefferson is sheer perfection. And he has great hair. He effortlessly channeled Prince with an amazing voice. He was the only actor I didn’t get a picture with, but gave him my compliments and got a signature. The guy standing next to me at the stage door told him that he stole the show, which he really appreciated hearing. I completely agree.
Mathenee Treco played Hercules Mulligan/Madison, and he was wonderful. Just as strong a rapper as Mulligan as he was a fantastic singer as Madison. I told him his singing voice was so beautiful afterwards. Super nice dude.
Isaiah Johnson played a wonderful Washington. My favorite Washington after Chris Jackson, whose voice is like butter (I even have a tagged on Tumblr for that).
One song I thought really stood out in this production that I never paid too much attention to on the OBCR or other cast audio/videos was “Washington on Your Side.” This particular trio of actors’ voices really harmonized well. I noticed they altered the arrangement slightly, particularly near the end of the song, since all three are such skilled singers and can hold notes equally well.
It was wonderful to see all the amazing choreography and lighting in this production. I missed a few bits of choreography I already knew to look for just because so much is happening on stage at once and I was a bit overwhelmed.
My mom and I came across a little girl of around 11 in a homemade Angelica dress, and her
hair was cut like Emmy’s with the half buzzcut, though her remaining hair was dyed green, with generous glitter on her face, applied by her older sister who had blue hair. Their mom was just beaming in joy at all the attention her daughters garnered. Those little girls were soooo excited to finally see the show.
Last week, the Blue Angels flew in formation right in front of me! They were flying around L.A. to promote the air show in Huntington Beach over last weekend. So cool. Wish I could have filmed it, but I was driving.
Kings started their season last night, and they had a tribute to Christiana Duarte, an employee who was killed in Las Vegas on October 1st. The Kings organization also lost an employee on 9/11. So sad. A friend of mine has a coworker who had a ticket to the Route 91 festival, and as the 1st approached, suddenly didn't feel comfortable going, even though all friends and family urged her to go and have fun, especially since she already bought the ticket. She ultimately decided to give up her ticket, and the person who ended up going in her place was killed. Naturally, she doesn't know how to feel about that.
