Another weekend off

I know this streak is too good to last, but I'm enjoying every bit of it. And what have I done with this weekend? I have FINISHED ANOTHER (short) STORY. I am madly pleased with myself and with the story. We'll see how long this delusion lasts. Today, I started and finished two books (neither of which had anything to do with my research) and went to the farmers' market here on the hill for the first time ever. It was nice. We spent too much money, but it was so totally worth it. Next time, we know to plan a bit better to combat the deer-in-headlights effect of being confronted with so much WIN. All in all, I crossed off most of my things on the 'to-do' list, and those left are all cleaning related (but not ALL the cleaning-related ones!).

Last night, we heard two gunshots from somewhere within a block of us and spent a significant portion of the rest of the evening listening to the police scanner, but there was no more news on the subject.

61. Bones of Faerie, Janni Lee Simner
Absolutely fantastic book. A simple, quick read with decent characterization and an amazing world concept that was also executed well. It's set in the St. Louis area, in a future following a war between the world as we know it and Faerie. I think it might be what she tells you without telling you that makes me like this book so much.

62. The Education of a Very Young Madam, Ma-Ling Lee
The memoir of a woman now in her late 20s/early 30s who opened her first brothel at the age of 16 and since then run successful escort agencies off an on. It's a good read and a fascinating character study. It also illustrates an entire other side of the sex industry from Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl. It will, of course, become fodder in a future story. Isn't everything?

The reading pile is dwindling now, and I intend to have it thoroughly depleted by the time we leave for the trip. And I am still ridiculously happy about finishing that short story. I hope when I pick it up again in a few weeks, it's as great as I think it is now. On the other hand, it was an intense story to write and it's left me both wrung-out and stuck in my mental 'writing zone'. Now if only I could turn that on Remi to get her finished up...

life, writing, reading list
