Lara Pulver as Doctor Who Rumors

From the same (unfortunately incorrect, it seems) rumor mill that brought you the Benedict-Cumberbatch-as-the-Master rumors, the next thing seems to be a possible casting of Lara Pulver (who, of course, played Irene Adler on Sherlock) as The Doctor ( Read more... )

That would be the best thing ever. The BEST.

(It would only be topped by casting Gina Torres as the Doctor and having her be in a relationship with River Song. But I don't think that one's going to happen :P)

Absolutely agree that this would be amazing. I would be so delighted.

OMG, Gina Torres as The Doctor would be cool, too! I think she might have to put on a British accent, though. (Because clearly to me while gender doesn't matter, the accent does. Heeee.)

I agree about the accent ;)

Who would you pick as a companion? I might go for Dev Patel, I adore him right now. Or Katie McGrath, who needs to be rescued from Merlin and put in something where she's actually allowed to have a character :P

Whoa, wow, Dev Patel would be so amazing. See, here I'm torn over who I would want as a companion. (Disclaimer: I actually don't know that much about modern British TV other than Being Human and Merlin and Sherlock.) I've definitely been sad over Katie McGrath's portrayal in Merlin, though. So one-dimensional when they could have made her complicated and delicious. It's such a waste.

And all the cool dynamics there could be with a male companion vs. a female companion with a female Doctor, like, the hotness does not end.

I'm a bit biased and basically want Chiwetel Ejiofor (from Serenity) to be in everything ever, but I'm thinking he might make a better Doctor than companion. So...I'm not sure...heh, I kind of would want Lenora Crichlow (from Being Human). But now I'm kind of addicted to the idea of a male companion to a female Doctor...

Well, I would find it a bit weird but not for any sexist reasons - it's just inconsistent with the rest of the series. Regeneration hasn't really been thoroughly explained in the series but as far we've seen so far there are male time lords and female time lords. We have consistently seen males regenerate as males and females as females so to have the Doctor regenerate into a female would be a bit random. I'm no biologist (or alien biologist) but I always assumed time lords had some basic DNA-type encoding in their physiology which ensured they were always a recombination of the same basic genes (as well as retaining their memories of course) which ensured that after regeneration they were still essentially the same person - maybe gender is included as part of that. Anyway, that's enough fanw**k from me.

Ah, fair enough. I'm afraid I don't know nearly as much about the canon as I probably should.

That said, as far as I know, it's not necessarily inconsistent, just thus far unexplained. Just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it can't, just that it's somewhat unusual (correlation not equaling causation and all that ( ... )
