Today I completed Driver's training and have my level One License! Kyle was at the Secretary of State when I went to get my license and was listening to his ipod. He smiled and nodded his head vigorously when I asked him if it was worth getting one. All of you that helped get it, you have made him very happy.
About the "Commander of Dreams" deal...
I was originally going to use Irrlicht when I started which seemed sensible, but I was told by Gamewriter that using Quest3D was a better option, despite its price tag of 2000 euros. Ew. But of course that doesn't matter to me. ;) send me an IM if you want to help and I'll set you up with a copy. I'm using c++ for the programming and 3DS Max for the graphics, but you can use your own 3D software if you have a different preference. What I have so far as far as the story goes (which is what I'm working on now), goes like this:
Gambalia: the land of magic and mystery. A land far different from our own, it is here that game pieces like cards, dice, and others are objects that connect to legends of the past. There are many legends like this. The most famous one goes like this:
Long, long ago, there was a treasure that enabled people’s wishes to come true. The legends say that after every few generations it would find a new owner pure of heart and he or she could use its magic as they wished. This person was known as the Commander of Dreams. But one day a man whose heart was of pure evil seized the Commander of Dreams of that time, a small girl, and forced her to fulfill his dark desires and plunged the land into misery. Sadly, the girl never made it out to tell her tale, for the man had worked her too hard, and she died of exhaustion. To make sure this never happened again, the King of that time ordered the land’s most trustworthy wisemen to seal the Treasure of Dreams in the Sacred Summit in the southernmost region of Gambalia, and to banish the dark one to the Graveyard. And there they stayed for many, many years. But a long time after, when tell of the treasure became legend, the dark one escaped from his prison in the graveyard and traveled to the Sacred Summit. There he started violently searching for the ancient treasure, anxious to gain his power he had lost, and in the process blowing the mountain apart and transforming it into a deadly volcano. What he didn’t know is that the wisemen also created four keys hidden in eight locations, which must be found and brought to the altar in the Sacred Summit in order to find the Treasure of Dreams. So there in the mountain he continues to look in the volcano of death. But fate will soon change everything, fate in the shape of a boy wishing to find his way home.
The boy’s name is Ace and he has mysteriously appeared in the Village of Hearts. No one, not even himself, knows how he got there. But he immediately sets out to find his way back home after hearing of the Legend of the Commander of Dreams. Contrary to what most people think, the legends are true, but little does Ace know that he is about to embark on a legendary journey that will take skill, bravery and courage to complete.
You are Ace. You must travel through Gambalia, and find the four keys that lead to the Treasure of Dreams. While doing that, you will uncover mysteries of the past that will somehow affect the future of the Legend, Gambalia, and you.
Games created long ago have great meaning in this land. For instance, The cities are named after card suits, there are plants shaped like illuminated dice, the Four Keys mentioned in the snippet above look like symbols from card games, stuff like that.
The only non-Gambalian in this game is Ace. Ace knows nothing of Gambalia, nothing of how he got there, and when he wakes up in the Village of Hearts, located in the northwest corner of Gambalia, the only emotion fit to describe him is bewilderment. After finding a weapon and learning about the ancient Legend, he sets out to find the Treasure of Dreams so to wish his way home.
It sounds like nonsense when put on paper, but in the game it will make more sense, I'm sure.
The gameplay I'm working on right now. I'm altering it from its original z-targeting-like battle tactics so it will be more fun and have more practice involved.
That's all for now, bye.
