I have a blackberry (8830, IIRC) and it has GSM, as well as GPS, it works with wifi (so if you are at home or whatever, you can use your home network, so it's much faster)
there is a good deal of free software - google gives blakberries to it's employees, so google releases blackberry specific software. also, it can run any java software.
I'm really, really happy with my choice in smartphones. I know iphones are sexier and more fun, but blackberries are way better at getting stuff done. (and I love being able to take it into places that don't allow cameras or camera phones - that's a requirement for my job)
I dunno if this comes too late, but I used to have an HP iPAQ, unlocked GSM. It worked extremely well for the length of time I had it. Watch out for their shitty warranty, though.
