Smartphones and you

I've been shopping for smartphones/pda phones lately. Few questions for those of you who read this who might be able to answer them:

1) If you own a blackberry, how is the software library? Is any of it free? If not, how low cost is it?
2) Does anyone own a Nokia that doesn't support the 3G network (like, any of their QWERTY keyboard phones)? If so, do you really notice the speed difference compared to, say, a blackberry or windows mobile device?
3) Does anyone have any recommendations for GSM smartphones, other than the iPhone (hello battery draining) or the Treos (I am considering this already as my backup plan), or should I just break down and stick with Verizon/CDMA for the sleek and sexy phones they have, since it seems most of the decent smartphones are CDMA in the US?

I want to go GSM for travel purposes (in case I do it anytime soon), and CDMA doesn't support it since its mostly a US style protocol. I was pondering a blackberry, but only if it has a decent library. I want to avoid windows mobile, due to horror stories about the OS. I would love to get a S60/Symbian phone (Nokia) but they don't utilize the 3G network, and don't know how much that's going to affect me.

Looking for ideas/thoughts/answers/comments/flames :p
