Title: Kindred Spirits
Claim: Vin Tanner (Magnificent 7)
Fandoms: Magnificent 7/Stargate SG1
Prompt: 028 - Children
Summary: Vin finds solace in yet another foster home.

The line at the end is taken directly from page 13 of Ancient Egypt, by Lorna Oakes and Lucia Gahlin, 2002. Not something that would have been around when Daniel was a teenager, but it's one of the few books on Egypt I have.

Table

Daniel frowned as he reread the passage in front of him. Concentrating on all his advanced textbooks was hard enough without all the noise that four energetic kids could make. He wanted to graduate early and there was no way he could do that if he couldn’t get through all his work.

He looked up sharply when the door edged open. He’d asked not to be disturbed before supper time and it wasn’t even 4 o’ clock yet. A shaggy head peered around the door and wide blue eyes stared at him. They both remained still and expectant.

“Can I help you?” Daniel asked eventually, his tone politely annoyed. A small shoulder shrugged as the boy slipped into the room, closing the door behind him. With quick, silent footsteps the boy was across the room and dropping to the floor beneath the window.

“It’s quiet,” he said when Daniel didn’t stop watching him. The voice was soft, but Daniel got the impression that the boy was reserved more than timid. He also recognised the accent as Texan, which surprised him since Texas was a long way from New York.

Daniel thought he might have heard something about the kid coming to New York so that his father could take custody of him, only to have his father die a year later. Daniel could empathise, but all the kids under the so called guardianship of Child Protective Services have tragic pasts, and sometimes it got to the point where all their faces blurred together.

Finally Daniel bowed his head to read his textbook again. He still wasn’t able to concentrate and he kept sneaking glances at the presence that was invading his space. The kid was quiet, which Daniel could appreciate, and he remained absolutely still, except for the curious eyes which seemed to dart everywhere but lingered on the books especially.

Finally Daniel sighed and closed the textbook. He obviously wasn’t going to get any work done, and he could afford to take a break, he was two weeks ahead of the class anyway. Daniel stood to reach for one the books he’d taken out of the library for his own interest. Immediately those intense blue eyes were on him. Daniel was surprised not to see fear or worry, which a lot of the foster kids displayed at sudden movements, just a sharp assessment.

Daniel reached for the book and pulled it open to where his bookmark was. He began to read over it, but he could feel the boy watching him intently. He shifted uncomfortably and looked up into inquisitive blue eyes. Finally he thought he’d figured out precisely why the kid had picked his room and he smiled a little as he began to read aloud, “Cultural transfer, especially from Mesopotamia and Elam, is often considered to have been the catalyst for Egypt’s formation as a unified state…”
