Vin leapt from the window and rolled smoothly when he hit the ground. Eva was dead. They’d killed her just like they had Jack. Jace had been left behind, and Vin felt conflicted about that, but it had been her decision. He just didn’t know how to deal with the fact that his team, his family, was disappearing, and he was actively helping the process. All because they’d had some vague idea of getting Max away the people who’d planned to take her away. He ran quickly, not missing a step, even though the snow burned his bare feet. The thrum of helicopters and the flash of searchlights were almost constant now.
Vin ducked behind a log, Zane close on his heels. Zack signed for them to get down and they both crouched as low as they could. Moments later Max crested the hill and Jondy followed soon after. When they were all gathered Zack signalled for them to split up. He pointed at Vin and Zane and gave them a direction. Vin was moving even as Max began to argue. It wasn’t long before he could hear snowmobiles, guns and shouts.
His heart was beating quickly and his breath was coming fast and shallow. He didn’t think he’d ever been so scared in his life, not even when Jack’s seizures got so bad that they took him and he never came back. Vin wished that Ben were with them. Ben had always managed to calm them down when they were scared. Vin glanced quickly at Zane who nodded at him, conveying everything from his own fear to encouragement. Vin nodded quickly in return.
All they had ever known was the facility and Vin hesitated when they reached the gate. There were times when it wasn’t too bad, and he didn’t know what was out there, beyond the fence. He didn’t know if it was worse or not. Zane gave him a pointed look and signalled that they needed to move quickly. Vin nodded again and together they jumped the fence. With one last look at each other they split up and ran off in their chosen directions. For the first time in his life Vin was on his own.
