If you're going to risk penalties for cashing in RRSPs, then you might consider just replacing the vehicle. Get it assessed.

I feel your pain, totally. I just shelled out $911 last weekend for similar work. The fact that the jobs cost similarly makes me think I didn't get cheated.

It sucks keeping one's self in wheels, but it's better than riding the bus.

I just went through this in February when the car blew a head gasket. I was given a 3-4 K estimate for repair on an engine with 230 K miles on it
