Lest we forget.
I think it is important to remember the people who died in wars long forgotten, defending the freedoms that we have today. The freedom to love who we want to love, to do what we want to do, say what we want to say - the freedoms that we often take for granted, treat as our birthright, instead of the dearly won things they really are...
Knowing that there are places in the world even today that people can be murded for things I don't give a second thought to on most days helps me to remember all the people who died to keep those freedoms for us.
I don't generally get overly sentimental and maudlin, but I think it's important to commemorate, take a moment and pay our respects to the fallen heros who have kept us free.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
And on a final note, my son said they played this video at the school assembly on Monday. It made me cry when I watched it, and very proud that the singer is a Canadian. Give it a whirl - you won't be disappointed.
