Sorry for the lack of updates, but I've been busy with many things, so this will probably be quite long.
My schedule this semester has gone through many permutations, but I settled on just 9 hours. I thought I was done with all my core, but turns out you must have 4 hours of theory, and no theory class is more than 3 hours, so I have to take another 3 hours class for that last hour, which stinks. But luckily they were offering Schenkerian Analysis, and since I took that in my undergrad, I decided to take that theory (it was either that or counterpoint, and I've already had 2 semesters of counterpoint). It seems like it will probably be a bit of work, but I have a pretty decent understanding of the material, and every class I go to I remember more stuff from Peles, so it shouldn't be to bad.
I'm also taking horn lessons, orchestra, horn ensemble, and chamber music. I think my chamber music will end up being a WW quintet which is what I wanted, but we are still in search of an oboe. Hopefully we can find one this week and get started on all that stuff.
I freaked out for a couple of days because I saw a few brownish-red spots on my new horn. I did some research and thought my horn had horn-cancer (brass rot - basically eats the metal through after a few years). I took some pictures of it with my camera, and emailed Finke about it and what I thought it was, and he responded saying that it was just some discolorations from the solder and laquer. Which, while they aren't pretty, they aren't very visable and they won't eat through my horn, so I don't really mind. Aside from that I'm starting to like my horn a lot, and I'm starting to get used to it and all the new fingerings and such.
The inevitable happened last night. I gave UPS my two-weeks notice. I don't have another job right now, but I do have AnteSpam, and can get a few more hours (Thanks Ben!). I am hoping to be able to talk to Prof. Heim and add some more students either/or find out about some local gigs to make at least a little money (gas at freakin' $3.19/gallon here). It stinks that I had to quit, because the money was pretty good, as were the benefits, but I was already stressed about studying and practicing, and it's only the second week of school. So I figured instead of waiting for it to get worse, I would go ahead and bite the bullet. Plus it gives them a little more time to hire someone to replace me (or try! ha) before the Christmas rush.
Also, in October I'm going on a cruise with some of Jessica's family, so I've been talking to teachers and such, and so far they are all okay with it.
One thing that I am not to happy about is the fact that I turned down Wind Ensemble because of work (that's when I knew I wouldn't be able to work there for much longer), but it's to late to add the class now. I hope I'll be able to talk to the director and maybe sit in a for a concert or two without actually "taking" the class - we'll see.
Hopefully Jessica and I will be able to keep up fairly regular visits - since she can only come up the fourth Sunday of each month, If I can go down during the middle of the month then we can see each other at mostly regular times. But of course now I can't afford gas as well, and gas just jumped 60 cents overnight.
Now I must go to work - but fewer than 10 days left woohoo!!
