The Dirty Projectors are the best new band I have come across in quite some time. I was worried that "Bitte Orca" was a fluke - a singular moment of inspiration - but I can put those fears to rest.
They have a collaboration with Bjork (!) available online-only called "Mount Wittenberg Orca". This is like a side project to them, created originally for a one-off show. It was written before Bitte Orca. It strips away the forward-thinking instrumental arrangements of Bitte Orca, and you know what? It's no less robust. I want to get the attention of most singer-songwriters and show them - "Look! Your music doesn't have to be a boring pile of a shit because you are only using an acoustic guitar! There can be innovation in melody and harmony alone!" Without hearing it for yourself, you might assume that it's the addition of Bjork that keeps the vocals interesting, but it's still the arrangements. It's just that several voices are used in an interesting way. Bjork is so well-integrated that she just sounds like she's part of the band here. Every voice (there are 4) is showcased equally.
I think I'm going to go buy a ticket for their September show in Toronto.
