Monday:
Working on Monday? Lame.
After work, we had to go shopping to pick up a work hoodie for Liz. Mall shopping is lame, but hanging out with my wife (hehe) is great, so it worked out. We ate some greasy mall food in the middle too.
We decided to go see Kung Fu Panda. I was worried we wouldn't be able to see it with digital projection since Wall-E is out, but Wall-E hasn't overtaken the digital projection theatres yet!
There was this awesome preview for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I have a feeling that will kick the shit out of Ep.1 and 2.
Kung Fu Panda was Kung Fu awesome. It had the appropriate dosage of awewsome Kung Fu violence. The evil character was a badass. It didn't overdo it with "Jack Black"ness. I'd call it an 8/10 type movie.
Apparently we hadn't watched enough stuff yet, so we rented Season 1 of the show "Weeds", which is actually damn good. (It follows a recently widowed mother of two struggling to support her two kids by selling pot in a rich surburban planned community.) Liz and I have already (after Tuesday) finished watching the 10-episode first season actually.
Tuesday:
Canada Day was alright. We walked over to some garage sales and then dropped by Dana's place and hung out a bit.
The three of us went to Columbia Lake. They had live music going, but it was just cover bands (though they were competent ones). It was stupid that they had a radio station competing with the live music though. There was one point that the main stage singer covered Shania Twain, and then the radio station played Shania Twain. Yuck.
We were basically there for the Waterloo Kung Fu Academy demonstration. I used to train there (approx. from 1990 to 2000 or so). The demo was really f-in' cool. They brought 25-30 students for the demo of all ages and ranks. The demo was pretty long too. They showed off almost everything they do.
The highlights were the katas. I much prefer the base techniques and strength of karate, but Chinese Shaolin Kung-Fu katas are so elegant and flowing and fierce. They showed off the broadsword kata well. They had 4 students doing it in 4 directions, and often they would reach the center with their swords together, making satisfying "clinks". The lady doing the Double Dagger kata was pretty fierce. (She also kicked ass at the self-defense demo.)
The best thing was a group of students doing various animal katas together (the Tiger, the Leopard, and the Dragon). Shuko-Kai Karate katas are often pretty boring to watch since they're so rigid and linear, but these had the Kung Fu students pouncing like animals, and prowling like tigers and leopards stalking their prey.
I found it cool how I actually remembered all of these katas from way back when. I was reciting some of the movements out loud to Liz before they happened.
We walked back to the new place and watched some more Weeds. My parents called and invited us to a dinner at Charcoal, so we went to that. We ate so much that we became tired and missed the fireworks. We polished off the last episode of Weeds and went to bed.
weekend,
