Maiden
I bought the new Iron Maiden album today.
I don't have any other Iron Maiden albums, and I'm only vaguely familiar with their past work. I "get" their aesthetic and their influence though. I heard 3 songs they had online and they were all very brilliantly executed, so I thought I'd check this album out.
Man. It's exhilarating to hear musicians on top of their game. Iron Maiden is not one of those needlessly noisy metal bands; songwriting, groove, and vocals are all important. Its aggression is in how everything is perfectly executed. It's dark, it's progressive, and it rocks.
Brighter Than a Thousand Suns is one of the best songs I've heard this year.
Watching the documentary DVD, I'm blown away that most of this was recorded live off the floor. In fact, even the VOCALS were taken right off the floor for most of the album!
