Yesterday we went to Asheville and met up with friends we haven't seen for a while - the music librarian I worked with a few years ago, his wife, and child. We had lunch at the
Laughing Seed, a vegetarian restaurant I kept hearing about but hadn't tried yet. It was amazing - the menu was huge, and it was refreshing to know I could have everything instead of being limited to the usual portabellas or Gardenburgers. I had the Havana Cuban Sandwich, which is "Crispy, batter-dipped organic three-grain tempeh, black bean spread, tomatoes, caramelized onions, dill pickles, and spicy mustard, grilled with Gruyere cheese on a fresh torta roll." It was delicious.
After that we window shopped and people watched, but N- and I were tired and left before the evening. Asheville is one of the absolute best places to people watch though - I think I'm going to set my next NaNoWriMo novel there, at least part of it. Before we left, we did buy chocolates from an amazing chocolate shop called
Chocolate Fetish. I had one truffle with dark chocolate, saffron, and ginger called the Ecstasy Blossom, but they were out of the High Tea Truffles. Guess I'll have to go back!
Today the same people called and they couldn't do the hiking as planned because of the rain, so they came down and I gave them a tour of the music library where I work and also the main library. It was neat to show my first music library to the person who inspired me to become a music librarian!
In between there I made danish pastry from scratch, from the recipe from
Baking with Julia. Of course I'll blog about it in my baking blog, but I was really proud. It was delicious, but definitely time consuming. I made the confectioners' cream from scratch too, as well as the dough, but bought pre-made jam. I'm sorry Julia, but some of us only have so much time. Now I have another half batch of dough to use next weekend.
