Indiana Adventures with the In-Laws

N-'s Mom and her boyfriend/partner/whatever are here this weekend from Oregon. It's been fun so far, not stressful but we've had long days.

Yesterday we drove to Connersville and took the Whitewater Valley Railroad to Metamora for Canal Days. I thought it would be fun to have them experience a pretty typical Indiana festival, and the train let us have two hours before riding back. The train ride itself was 1.5 hours each way, which was longer than I expected, but it was interesting. The guy talking on our car was a little aggravating because he only had one voice level - very very loud. And after saying all the interesting parts about what we were seeing outside, A- accidentally made eye contact, so the guy shouted really dumb jokes at him for almost an entire hour. So other than that annoyance, it was a good time.

I was going to make dinner that night but we were tired and hungry so we had a delicious stop at India Garden, which I truly believe is the best Indian food ever.

Today they took us shopping, and I went to a store I hadn't been to before. I'm usually pretty skeptical of clothes shopping because I almost never find anything that fits well or looks good and I usually just buy whatever is on clearance. But today I found two essential clothing items I have been lacking - JEANS (woo!) and a suit for potential future interviews. I was ecstatic. I also got a really cute watch among other things. I used to have a morning ritual when I would wake up and say to N-, "I can't get up because I hate all my clothes." Last month I cleaned out almost everything, since most of the clothes I own I don't wear, and now I have room to put my new ones!

Then we went to afternoon tea at the Canterbury Hotel in Indianapolis, which was our treat for them. The afternoon tea was in the lobby, and you sit on comfy chairs and/or couches, and the dishes were right at knee level on the coffee table (there were some people with real tables and chairs, but not us). The food was okay; first came a course of little treats like cream puffs and chocolate cups with mouse and cannolis; second were tea sandwiches; third were scones. The first course was excellent, the tea sandwiches were fine, and the scones were dry and not good. Two out of three isn't bad I guess. There was also a live piano player who made conversation amusing (he was loud) but still, it was a nice relaxing way to spend an hour after shopping all afternoon.

Tomorrow we're not venturing very far - they brought all of their drums and flutes with them and we're going to my boss's and her partner's house to drum and talk. I just know they'll all get along splendidly, so I'm happy that worked out. Then V- is going to show me her essential oils and I'm going to show her my BPAL oils and I'm going to finally cook dinner; it should be a more relaxing day. For those of you who have had it, I'm making my now-famous Sweet Potato Peanut Stew. Yum!
