NEWFOUND RESPECT by
wildcat88 “This one.”
“I don’t know, buddy. I’d hate for you to get killed your first time,” Sheppard drawled, forehead scrunched in doubt. “That one’s a stallion. You’re better off-”
“This one,” Ronon insisted.
“If you’re sure…”
“I’m sure.” He stepped back, continuing the staring contest with the tall, sleek animal while Sheppard grabbed a rope and opened the gate. “What’s it called again?”
“A horse. This one’s a Thoroughbred.” Sheppard led the animal outside, tied it up, smoothed a blanket on its back then hefted a leather contraption over it.
“What’s that?”
“A saddle. You sit on it.”
Ronon walked around the horse, trailing a hand up its back, over its chest, down its neck while Sheppard worked. The animal tossed its head and whinnied, jerking away from Ronon’s touch, the challenge in its eyes unmistakable.
Sheppard shoved something hard in its mouth and pulled straps over its face, handing the ends to Ronon. “Okay, big guy. Give me a minute to saddle one.”
The horse snorted, pawed at the ground, practically dared Ronon to get on. Holding tightly to the reins, he walked to the side and studied the saddle. How hard could it be? He stuck one foot in the dangling circle and swung his other leg over then slipped the rope from its neck.
“Ronon!”
The world became a blur of blues and greens when the horse bolted, powerful legs stretching to their fullest extent. Ronon hunched over its neck, dreads whipping behind him, as close to flying as he ever would be. His howl of delight turned to a shout when the animal leaped over a brook and suddenly stopped. Unprepared, Ronon somersaulted over its head. He tucked in mid-air, slamming shoulder-first into the ground. Blinding pain shot through him as his shoulder popped out of place. He panted through clenched teeth until the world stopped spinning, glancing up to see the horse smirking at him as it leisurely grazed. Pounding hooves announced Sheppard’s arrival.
“You okay?”
Ronon looked up, catching the worried amusement in Sheppard’s eyes. “Fine.” He picked himself up, shuffled to a nearby tree, and slammed his shoulder back in place.
“I hate it when you do that.”
“I know.”
“Don’t suppose you want to have a doctor look at it.”
“Nope.”
Ronon moved cautiously to the creature’s side, speaking softly, taking the reins with newfound respect. He wasn’t going anywhere just yet.
