TO BE A FLY ON THE WALL by TO BE REVEALED

Some of the men think ‘gate room duty is the best of the rotational posts inside Atlantis. If a team is coming in hot, it can be damned exciting. Plus you get to see some of the more entertaining confrontations in the expedition leader’s office. I was standing guard the time Weir tore a strip off Dr. McKay for blowing up a solar system. That story has been worth more than a few beers over the years.

But my favorite duty, when not doing real Marine stuff, is the medical suites. Picked up some of my best stories while working as an orderly in the infirmary.

Most of the time I just act as a conduit for men who are being held in beds back to the rest of the battalion, and I’ve smuggled in more than one piece of contraband. I’ve also been to be able to report on other patients. Like the time Colonel Sheppard was turning into a bug and later when he was changing back. And I was the first Marine to hold Teyla’s baby (and presented her with a tiny t-shirt the men had gotten for him, with “USMC Devil Puppy” printed on it), and I have the pics to prove it.

So when I saw Ronon supporting a moaning Dr. McKay into the exam area I quickly shoved the last box of latex gloves into the supplies cabinet. It was their usual day to train together and McKay often ended up here; today Ronon was limping and hunched over, while McKay was holding both hands to his face with blood leaking between his fingers.

I hurried to the linen room and grabbed a stack of sheets before infiltrating the exam area. Luckily the privacy screens hadn’t been deployed. There was no sign of a doctor yet (it would probably be Dr. Keller because of McKay- and who wasn’t surprised by that combo?), but Nurse Grady was bustling around setting up an instrument tray.

I put out my best “I’m Invisible” vibes and started rearranging sheets in the already full cabinet.

“Oo hid muh.”

That was McKay. He sounded pissy, but then - when does he not?

“How many times do I have to tell you: ‘watch my eyes’?”

“Uh wuhd.”

“No, you weren’t. If you had been you would have blocked like we’d practiced and the stick wouldn’t have touched you.”

Grady activated an ice pack and handed it to McKay. The protective fingers peeled away, revealing a swollen nose with a heavily bleeding cut across the bridge and bruises already showing around both eyes.

“You dropped your guard, McKay, and got hit. But that’s no excuse for what you did to me.” Ronon accepted an ice pack and applied it gingerly to his groin.

I chewed a knuckle to keep from laughing.

McKay mumbled something behind the ice pack.

“That’s not gonna help you when I can walk again,” Ronon growled.

Oh, yeah. Good times, my friends, good times.
