IN PLAIN SIGHT by TO BE REVEALED

Malir knew the Lantean reputation. Generally speaking, they were considered odd but friendly, introducing themselves as peaceable, curious explorers. He also knew that they used Ancestral machinery to impress the impressionable.

Malir wasn't easily impressed.

He'd heard the screaming, but the kick of the rifle had prevented him from visually checking on the immediate results of his shot, so he settled back down to look through the scope again. Instead of the expected flurry of movement, all was still in the narrow pass below him. There was no way he'd missed, not with this vantage point; the Genii paid him good money because he was good at what he did. He couldn't have missed.

He hadn't.

His quarries were huddled against a large rock, in enough shadow that he'd missed them at first. He'd aimed for the shortest of the three men, who'd been staring at some glowing device in his hand, and was now lying propped up against the rock, while the dark-haired man who seemed to be in charge bent over him, talking in a low voice that echoed through the pass just too softly for Malir to make out the words.

As he continued his survey, Malir found the woman, who'd been his first choice of target until she'd moved closer to the man-mountain bringing up the rear. In Malir's sights, her face looked oddly blank, and she was carefully swinging her weapon to cover the pass. He could move to get a shot at her, but that would probably give her a shot at him as well. And judging from what he'd seen so far, these people were good. No bounty was worth that risk.

What was starting to bother Malir was that he couldn't see the fourth member of their group anywhere, and a man that big shouldn't be able to just vanish. Shaking his head, he put his eye to the scope again and fixed his aim on the wounded man. The team leader was pulling something out of a pocket, still talking constantly. Like the woman, if he was worried or angry, it didn't show on his face, and he actually smiled at one point, shaking his head before pressing a bandage to the other man's shoulder.

Malir, who was more used to seeing panic in his victims, shifted uneasily. Most groups he targeted just ran away, leaving the wounded to fend for themselves, but apparently the Lanteans did things differently. Even the wounded man looked relatively calm and quiet now, holding the bandage in place and nodding his head at a question. It looked like they were getting ready to move again.

Fine.

Lining up for a shot at the dark head that was just too tempting a target, Malir took a deep breath.

"Got you," he muttered, readying himself to fire on the exhale.

There was the whine of a weapon behind him, and Malir froze, almost able to hear the grin in the newcomer's voice as he spoke.

"Got you."
