WAITING by TO BE REVEALED

“Him first,” Dr. McKay tells her. Any other time it wouldn’t sound right coming from him, but now isn’t any other time.

Sheppard doesn’t say anything; he just looks at Melinda and she runs over and sees if there’s nothing she can do to help Ronon or Teyla.

They’re surrounded by doctors and nurses and a couple of scientists, all of them looking harried and frantic. Melinda might be new to the Pegasus galaxy, but she’s not new to the emergency room, and she knows when to stay out of the way. She goes back to Colonel Sheppard and raises her eyebrow, and this time it’s he who backs down, extending his arm almost penitently for the blood pressure cuff. He never takes his eyes off his teammates until they’re wheeled out of the room and into the surgery.

Sitting on another bed, Dr. McKay makes an exasperated noise and thumps his fist against the rail.

Colonel Sheppard sits by Teyla, Dr. McKay by Ronon. Sheppard has a book in his lap and pretends to read, and Rodney has a laptop and pretends to work. They both look like they haven’t slept in ages.

“You’ll be fine,” Melinda hears Sheppard tell Teyla one time when she passes by. He’s got his hand on her shoulder, his head on the edge of her mattress. “You’re going to make it.”

Rodney doesn’t say anything uplifting, but occasionally, when he thinks no one is looking, he pokes Ronon in the arm with his stylus. Just to make sure the big guy’s not faking, Melinda guesses. One time she comes by to take Ronon’s temperature and Rodney is telling how one time his sister got stuck on top of a chain link fence and he climbed up and brought her down.

When she finishes her shift, Melinda brings them both a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. They say thank you in that vague, distracted way that makes her send up a silent prayer for Ronon and Teyla.

When she comes back on shift in the morning, Sheppard and Rodney are asleep, hunched over the beds with the blankets tucked around their shoulders. One of the nurses brings them breakfast. Rodney’s fingers are shaking so badly he spills the fruit cup, and the syrup splashes all over the heart monitor. Sheppard doesn’t laugh.

They are still sitting there when Ronon and Teyla wake up.
