Rodney sighed. That was unfair.
Models! How could he…?
Right. His cousin, John Sheppard, jobbed as a model from time to time. He had lots of friends with just the right height, slim and muscled bodies, beautiful eyes and handsome faces.
That was unfair.
John was tall, slim, had a handsome face and some kind of intelligence… okay, he was even really intelligent. More intelligent than some of the people Rodney had to work with, even.
Why John did this was beyond Rodney.
The man was intelligent, his parents had enough money to support him to no end. Why put up with this dumb and arrogant people?
John seemed really normal. He was gloating about how good-looking he was, how *anyone* should just look at *him* because *he* was the most handsome man in the whole town, no, make that the whole state!

Rodney worked in the research lab of John’s parent’s airplane company. It was only until he found someone to finance his wormhole research.

And now he had to go and be at this stupid birthday party with all those beautiful people and Rodney felt so inferior. That wasn’t something he would admit - but here, knowledge and intelligence didn’t seem to be valued much.

After a lot of (off-key) singing and handing over presents, eating birthday cake and plundering the buffet, John came over to Rodney, a young, amicable man following him.
“Rodney, I want you to meet a… dear friend of mine. This is Carson Beckett. Carson, this is my cousin and favourite little brother, Rodney McKay.”
“Doctor Rodney… never mind…” sighed Rodney. It *had* seemed intelligent to point out how intelligent he was. He held out his hand. “Nice to meet you!”
Carson smiled at him. “Nice to meet you, too! You look a bit young for having a medical doctorate yet. So… what’s your profession?”
“Well, although I could have managed a medical doctorate by now if I had wanted to, you’re right. I’m a Physicist. Specialized on wormhole physics but right now… I’m working on new designs for better and cheaper and faster planes. Just until I get someone to… right… I think that’ll just bore you!”

Rodney knew what John was playing at.
And it worked. On Rodney’s side, at least.
But Carson surely was a bit of a difference.
While most of the male models in the room (especially those with the girlfriends) looked really gay, Carson looked almost frighteningly straight.
Carson could lay his arm around any girl in the room and Rodney would be convinced that they were a couple.
And even if he HAD that kind of interest in men, there were enough men for a lifetime in this room before he would be so desperate to have to resort to someone like Rodney.

“Oh, I never was good in Physics in school, but perhaps if you use small words I'll be able to pretend I can follow you? Somehow I have the feeling you’ll go on like a tume mill, anyway!”
Rodney laughed a bit and panicked as John left them alone. “Well, it’s maybe the first time I say this, but I didn’t understand that. Didn’t sound… too offensive, though…”
Carson smiled. “Oh… no… it just means that you’ll talk without a pause, no matter what. I… should stop using all those idioms from home…”
Rodney couldn’t place Carson’s accent. “And where is this where you come from?”
“Scotland.”
Rodney nodded. Try some small talk? Say something about Sean Connery? Kilts?
“So… what are you… doing then?” asked Rodney.
“I tried out as professional football player… I mean, what you call soccer. Then I realized that Scotland’s already got a bad enough team.”
Rodney grinned at the joke. He couldn’t imagine that Carson would be bad at anything.
“Next thing was acting. It’s nice, I love it! But… I don’t think I could make a living out of it!”
Rodney nodded. “Well…what was next? Plumber? Butcher?”
Carson laughed and smiled at him. “No, but close. Currently I’m trying to make enough money with modelling and stuff to come around with my medicine study.”
Okay… Rodney was impressed. Not much, only a bit. But it was enough to make him interested in Carson. Not that he wasn’t impressed… mesmerized by Carson’s physical appearance anyway.

John came over to Rodney, who was standing at the balcony, picking on the food on his plate.
“Hey? What’s up, little brother?”
Rodney snorted. “Aren’t you a bit old for this ‘we can anything we want to be’?”
“Does that mean that I can’t feel for you like I would for a little brother, Rodney?”
“You *know* that I’m three years older, right?”
John laughed and laid an arm around Rodney. “Hey… what’s happened? Did Carson upset you with his obliviousness to the constant wrongness of the authors of science fiction?”
Rodney snorted. “Is that even a word? Wrongness? For someone as intelligent as…”
Rodney interrupted himself with a sigh. He wanted to go home!
“Did he? Come on, tell me!”
Rodney wriggled out of John’s grip. “No. Let me just… I have a headache. I will go and lie down. At home! I’ll be fine after a couple of aspirin.”
“You know, Carson surely could…”
“Just drop it, okay?” said Rodney. “Drop it! There’s no chance in hell that this will work!”
John patted his cousin’s shoulder.

Two weeks later, John invited Rodney for dinner. He had said he wanted to go out with his new lover and needed someone to accompany them to let it look casually.
Rodney looked indignantly when he saw Carson was there at the restaurant, too.
John went over to the table to take the tall, slim, dark-haired woman next to Carson in his arms.
“Hello, Lizzy!” he grinned and kissed her.
Rodney lifted his eyebrows. So, after a few almost-relationships with men, he had swung back to women. But this didn’t explain Carson’s presence.
“My cousin, Doctor Rodney McKay. Rodney, this is Elizabeth Weir, she’s a photographer. Met her on the Campus after maths-lectures. She had visited British Literature…”
“I’m glad you still see some need to attend those!” snapped Rodney at John.
John grinned. “Just until I got my helicopter flying license. And until Mom will let me take over the company.”
Rodney shook his head with annoyance. “Hello, Carson!”
“Hello Rodney! I’m a friend of Elizabeth’s and she asked me to come along, too.”
Rodney gulped. “Yeah, that’s how small the world is, isn’t it?”

They talked about everything and nothing until Lizzy and John wanted to go home - together.
“I can drive Rodney home, that’s no problem!” smiled Carson helpfully.
“Yeah, that’s… alright!” said Rodney.
After they had paid, John and Liz drove home to John’s place and Rodney let Carson drive him home.
“Wanna come up to the apartment?” asked Rodney when they stood in front of his apartment building. “Can make us some coffee or something…”
Carson nodded. “Would be nice!”
So they went to Rodney’s apartment.
Carson smiled at the not neat and tidy but at least clean apartment.
“Sit down on the sofa, I’ll get us the coffee!”

They just sat there and talked for a while until Carson sighed and laid his hand on Rodney’s arm. He looked at his knee.
“Rodney, I think John did this for some strange reason. I mean, introduce us!”
Rodney gulped. “Yes.” He had hoped that this wouldn’t come up. “I think so…”
“Rodney… I suspect that he’s got a very… special idea about how this should develop…”
This was time for Rodney to react…end it before it became embarrassing.
“Look, Carson… you’re a nice guy, okay? And I think John had something like this in mind when he introduced us to each other. But he’s wrong! I don’t think we share a lot of interests or traits, you know? And I’m not even talking about your ill choice of profession!”
Carson looked at Rodney and the man asked himself, if he really had to resort to: “I’m gay and you’re not, so we aren’t really compatible!”
Carson began to nod. “Right, okay! Aye, you’re right, I guess! Was nice to meet you, though. You’re a… you’re nice, too! I’m sorry, I guess. Well, see you around!”
With this, Carson left and Rodney leaned back on the sofa.
This had went well, so far. It would only be a matter of time until he’d get ill because of the lovesickness, though.

---

“What the heck did you think, Rodney?” asked John when he burst through the half opened door, past the sniffing and coughing McKay some days later. “ About ending things so abruptly with Carson. I thought you liked him!”
Rodney sniffed a bit more. “I do… would I look like this, if I didn’t?”
John pushed the door close and sighed.
“Rodney, why did you dump him then? I tried to hook you up, as you seemingly understood! At least Carson thought that you said something like this!”
Rodney trotted into the living room and sat down on the sofa.
“John… he’s straight as an arrow! And that’s unfair! He’s the only person who doesn’t want to vomit after five minutes of small talk with me and I love him and he is straight!”
John brought his face close to Rodney’s. “You. IDIOT! What do you think how I came up with the idea of hooking you two up? We bumped into each other after a party and next thing I know I that we are kissing and groping in a closet!”
Rodney sneered. “So… nowadays I get your laid aside lovers?”
John shook his head. “No. I just realized that I like him but not enough to build something on it. He’s a too nice person to be hurt after a few days or weeks of passion.”
Rodney sniffed. “So?”
“Rodney… if you want to, I’ll call him and tell him that you *are* interested in him. I told him back then that I wasn’t reciprocating his feelings quite the way I had to, to be with him and not hurt him after a while.”
John stroke Rodney’s sweaty and probably teary cheek.
“I told him I wanted to introduce him to someone he might like. He likes you, Rodney. He wanted to meet you again after you vanished so soon during the party. And now he thinks you’re the straight one!”
“I feel so miserable!” said Rodney.
“Come on! Lay down in your bed, try to sleep and I’ll phone Carson, okay?”
Rodney let John help him up and went over to the phone while Rodney lied down to rest.

After what seemed like only a minute later, a cool hand came to rest on his forehead. Rodney sighed contently and snuggled closer.
A soft chuckle let Rodney open his eyes. He saw an unfamiliar face and blinked a moment.
“Carson?”
The young man smiled. “Aye! I’m here. Just close your eyes, dearie! I’ll be back in a tick and make you feel a lot better, okay?”
Rodney turned on his back and pulled Carson down to kiss him. “Just undress and make me feel better right now!” whispered the slightly fevering man.
Carson chuckled. “We’ll do that after the tea, the chicken soup and more rest!”
Rodney mentally checked his stack of condoms. Good… they would probably last until the end of the week. Rodney grinned to himself and drifted back to sleep.
