Five Months Earlier

After twenty-fours and not finding anything, Dr. Lam had released Colonel Mitchell. Daniel assured her he would keep an eye on the other man. And after that nothing more came of it-at least not until four weeks later.

Early one morning Daniel woke up to the sound of retching coming from the bathroom. He got up and found Cam hunched on the bathroom floor, arms wrapped around his middle. Daniel had called Dr. Lam and Cameron was taken to the USAF Academy hospital.

An unshaven Daniel wearing a ratty t-shirt and jeans stalked the halls of the hospital. Soon the rest of the team and Jack arrived. He was bombarded by several questions by his friends. “I don’t know,” he snapped at them.

Jack with a single word and a look had everyone spreading apart and away from Daniel. The retired Air Force General leaned back against the wall next to Daniel who was doing the same.

“Don’t say it,” Daniel said looking ahead.

“What?” Jack’s voice sounding every bit the innocent.

“We are in a United States Air Force hospital and I shouldn’t be freaking out like this,” Daniel whispered.

Jack opened his mouth to say something when Dr. Lam walked out. “He’s feeling better,” she began. “I gave him a sedative so he should be able to sleep soon. I’m still running tests, but nothing has come up yet.”

“Can we see him?” Daniel asked wanting so badly to ask if only he could see him.

“For a minute,” she agreed.

Daniel was the first in. He heard the door close behind him and saw the rest of his team stand back a little ways to give him a moment. “Cameron,” he grasped his lover’s hand.

Cam’s eyes cracked open. “Hey,” was his sleepy response.

“We just have a minute,” Daniel said.

“Daniel,” Cam managed to say. “Wanna go home.”

“Maybe in a day or two,” Daniel said.

Present

Daniel got out of Jack’s car and walked into the hospital. He didn’t notice his friends. He just walked. They must have been there though because he had somehow made it to the ICU where Cameron was.

Dr. Lam appeared in front of him saying things like heart attack and too weak to go home. But all that really sunk in for him was that Cameron was alive.

Someone asked if they could see him and the next thing Daniel knew he was sitting in a chair next to Cameron’s bed. His lover had an oxygen mask over his nose and mouth. Lines and cords were everywhere.

Daniel remembered the day they learned what was wrong with Cameron.

Five Months Earlier

Cameron had been in the hospital for almost a week. He was feeling a lot better and getting restless. He wanted out of there.

It was the middle of the afternoon and Daniel was sitting in a chair next to him when Dr. Lam appeared. She looked from Daniel to Cameron before Cameron let her know it was okay to say whatever she needed to say in front of Daniel. She knew about their relationship, but she felt she needed for Cam to say it was okay.

“We’ve detected a foreign substance in your blood,” she said.

“A foreign substance?” Cameron asked.

“It looks like you’ve been poisoned,” she took another breath. “At this time however we don’t know what it is or how to counteract it.”

“Could it have happened offworld?” Daniel asked.

“It is a distinct possibility,” she said.

“When?” Daniel asked.

“I can’t answer that,” she said. “Whatever this is it’s nothing like anything we’ve seen.”

“A month ago you passed out,” Daniel said looking at Cameron.

“I didn’t pass out,” Cameron said. “I got dizzy.”

“Whatever,” Daniel waved his hand. “The point is it was a month ago. We should look at where you were around a week prior and then go there and see if anyone on any of those planets can tell us anything.”

“All right,” Cam pushed back the cover. “Let’s go.”

“Wait a second,” Lam put a hand against Cam’s chest. “We don’t know what kind of an effect this is going to have; I’m not releasing you to go offworld.”

“She’s right,” Daniel added.

Cameron slumped back against the pillows.

“It’s unlikely whatever happened, happened a month ago,” Dr. Lam said. “I should have detected something then.”

“Better to cover all our bases,” Daniel leaned against the bed looking at Cam. “I promise you’ll know as soon as we find something,” he squeezed Cameron’s wrist.”

Present

It was the next morning. Daniel sat next to Cameron’s bed feeling exhausted.

“Daniel,” his name was spoken by a weak voice.

Daniel leaned over towards his lover.

“Take me home. You promised.”

Daniel swallowed the lump growing in his throat and blinked back the tears that were threatening.
