It's slightly horrifying to consider that when SG-1 walked into that dome, they essentially doomed at least four people to death to compensate. That's the thing about science fiction (and particularly the way that SG-1 does concepts like this) isn't it? Think about a little bit and its just...ugh. Although in this case its deliberately disquietening and something that only becomes creepingly apparent after a bit. And SG-1 have an unfortunate habit of dooming as well ( ... )

SG-1 have an unfortunate habit of dooming as well.

But they do it so adorably cluelessly! :)

I agree with you, I think, that the lighting and secondary characters had a lot to do with this ep. the only ones who aren't creepy are Pallin and Evalla, and she dies.

Did you ever listen the commentary for this ep? MS takes part and talks about how the extras were told to be creepy and didn't stop even when the cameras weren't rolling... :)

Yes, lots of "Whoops, sorry about that!" going on, which leads to unexpected funny and cuteness (of the doughnut science explanations and little grey butts speak kind).

Its a wee bit 'by the numbers' I think. The townspeople shouldn't be quite so obviously creepy, as they're not aware of what they're going and the Link isn't a sentient, evil thing in itself. And of course the ones who aren't creepy...well, they're either going to die or be converted at the last minute, surely?

I vaguely remember that (why yes, I have listened to every S1-8 commentary at least once :D)

::nods:: It may be as simple as the strokes being painted a little too broadly. And of course the non-creepy ones had to die. ;)

It is horrifying-and of course the episode doesn't deal with their recognition of deaths they caused, completely by accident and without being able to foresee it. (That's what fanfic is for, right?)

I really liked this episode; it did resonate for me, but then again, it was the fifth episode I'd ever seen. It gave me a great feel for the team, whom I was still getting to know.

They might not have realized the implications at first. I can picture it sinking in when they're debriefing Hammond and all of them suddenly looking very sick.

I think you should write it for us! :)

Ah, nostalgia for your first episodes! Always a good thing.

I love this episode and I love Spirits (seriously, there are people who don't love that episode? Tonane alone makes that episode FULL of win).

I don't always like episodes where SG-1 are split up into 3 or more situations, but I felt it worked in this episode, because, as you say, they are doing what they do best; the division doesn't seem arbitrary, and IIRC they all contribute something of worth.

One thing to remember is that if SG-1 hadn't come along, those people would have died anyway, if a little later, and everyone else would have died eventually. SG-1 ensured that some survived and that there was at least some memory of one of the women who died, where they would have been none at all.

Hee! I can't figure out why more people don't love Spirits either. Tonane cracks me up every time, and "Because" and Sam being a competent leader and just... ::squishes episode::

I suppose you're right that those people would have died, but it can't have been a pleasant realization. Although it's creepy to consider that the dome had already shrunk to ten percent of its original capacity. It must have been accelerating exponentially. SG-1 got there just in time.
