What is this food item that Daniel eats and tells Chaka is good? In the interest of verisimilitude, I investigate. I have in my hand, a "Bioprotein Chocolate Coated Chocolate Energy Bar". I have no idea what kind the U.S military includes in their MREs, so I don't know how truly similar this is, but it should give the general idea.
I am opening the wrapper....It looks like a chocolate bar. For you Canadians, it looks like a Crispy Crunch (Americans, think flatter, wider, thinner Butterfinger), but in terms of plyability, it's more like an Eatmore. Bendy. (If you are not in Canada or the U.S., I hope that means something to you)
I am taking a bite. Hey! That's pretty good! Way better than I expected! It's more solid than a chocolate bar and a little chewy. I am even more impressed now that I realize the 'best by' date was 5 years ago. Wow! Why is this edible?
There is a slight aftertaste of something that isn't very chocolate bar like. I'm guessing that is the "engineered synthisis of whey protein concentrate, milk protein isolate, soy protein isolate, casinate, whey glutamine peptide blend, and egg albumen." Actually, it's not all that noticable, and not unexpected given that this energy bar has 21 grams of protein in it. One wonders if it would be noticable at all if the bar wasn't way older than the time it is meant to be consumed by.
Another thing to note is that, as of halfway through the bar, I am totally full. Too full. You'd have to be quite hungry, or a much bigger eater than I am, to eat a whole bar in one sitting. The MRE energy bar that Daniel shares with Chaka is slightly less than half the size of this particular bar, however, which makes it a more useful size.
All in all, if MRE chocolate energy bars are as tasty as this one, Daniel does not have an unusual tolerance for yuckiness.
