2008 Video Summary and Some Observations

Dec 29, 2008 13:10

Here's a summary of the videos that I've done and a few of the graphics that seemed worthy of inclusion. I really haven't done much in terms of graphics, and it has only recently occurred to me that my icons could be approached in the same way that I approach writing, videos, and larger graphic efforts. Good thing I did this summary! I discovered the the pages were showing all the wrong videos, some kind of LJ embed issue-not the first time that's happened either. Had to do a bunch of fixing...

2008 video: Stargate SG-1

September
( Scientists)
My first video... Fig Newton requested a Sam and Daniel Friendship Video on the Fall Fandom Free For All. I may not have tried this, otherwise. It has major editing problems due to my lack of skills at the time. I revised it later on.

(SG-1: We Will Be There )
I removed this one from Youtube. It was to a song that is used by the National Guard, and there was a copyright complaint. I took that more seriously than I might have in other cases-because it was the National Guard. I removed the video, and didn't post it elsewhere. I have great respect for the the National Guard. Too bad, it was a good video, for the most part.

( Life and Daniel Jackson)
I was quite happy with this one, and revised it when my skill level allowed for it. It is the most popular of my videos by a wide margin.

( In the End)
This video was about as popular as... well, something bad. It has numerous problems, the least of which are brightness/contrast issues. I was in a fairly angry mood, and I made a fairly angry video. The thing about Daniel is while he may feel bitter and angry on occasion, he puts it aside and moves on. He doesn't wallow. This video might have worked if I tied the feelings to a particular moment, rather than a whole episode, as I tried to do with 'The Ori - Interlude: Overcome'. I don't think it works as is.

( Destiny: SG-1 and the Goa'uld)
I like this video a lot. It's a nice team thing with a bittersweet edge.

October
( SG-1: Help)
Trying to be a little more upbeat here. I find it interesting that my videos are generally much more angst ridden than my stories. That is partly due to the difficulty of finding happy music that is in any way appropriate for 'canon' SG-1 vids, but still, interesting...

( The Ori: Part 1)
This is the first time I tried transparency and overlapping clips. While I think this works on an emotional level, there are some nasty transitions, and some places where the layering is so dense that it gets muddy. One of these days, I'm going to do a revised version (which is why I haven't made this one available for download yet), but I know that it's going to take a lot of time.

( SG-1: Freedom)
My point didn't come across clearly enough, here, although I think the editing is pretty good. Within the context of the larger fight for freedom, I was trying to say that freeing the Unas was pretty much the same as freeing the Abydonians, and that shooting the tank of larval Goa'uld wasn't any different than killing a Jaffa, except the Jaffa dies too. These things are all part of fighting for freedom. This is another video that will be edited one of these days, but unlike 'The Ori: Part 1', I have made this one available for download. Two things of note- my obsession with the look that Daniel gives Sam after shooting the tank is displayed for the first time (you'll see that again. It's just awesome), and Michael Shanks appears to nearly had his hand blown off by pyrotechnics in the escape from the Unas slave cells. Watch for that.

( Fear: Absolute Power)
I think this is a pretty good video. There are a few layering issues, once again, but it holds up pretty well, all in all. There will probably be an attempt to clean this up a little, one day.

( Scientists-revised)
Changes to brightness and contrast, some editing changes. There are still a couple of timing problems, but they aren't fixable without changeing the video more than I wanted to.

November
( The Ori: Part 2)
The Ori expand into the Milky Way, spreading plague. This one is about the feeling of helplessness when faced with the Ori's power. There is one clip in here that could be better chosen, but I like this video quite a bit. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority.

( I'll Find You: Daniel and Sha're)
Daniel's determination to find Sha're and the result. We know how that went... This is done in a somewhat experimental style that clearly does not find favor with everyone if viewing numbers are any indication, but it's one of my favorites.

( SG-1 : Absolute Power (Dr. Horrible Version))
I really like this video. It worked out just as I wanted-funny and chilling.

December
( The Ori - Interlude: Overcome)
My best edited, conceptually coherant, and emotionally effective video to date. I'm very proud of this one. My only problem with it is that I don't seem to have made it clear enough that, to me, it is frustration and disillusionment with the Ancients that trigger Daniel's momentary breakdown, and not torture by the Doci. Don't know what I can do about that, though.

( Life and Daniel Jackson: Revised)
Fixed a lot of minor things. I always liked this video, now I really like it.

( The SGC: Air Force All The Way )
Another attempt to be upbeat. It's 'The Air Force Song' - what's not to love?

( The Ori: Part 3)
The battle at the Supergate, and it's aftermath. This one is too new to have any perspective, but I think it works pretty well. The layering works better than in previous videos, and the magnitude of the defeat is quite clear. Technically, this one is right up there with my best, although it lacks the poignancy of some. My focus was on the totality of the defeat and the intensity of the battle. I won't actually know what I think about it until I have watched it a lot more times, and gained some distance, however.
