S-i-l got married today. It was a strange affair. For a start there is the age difference - the best man seemed to take an odd delight in pointing out that in one brief ceremony she had managed to become a wife, a step-mother, a step-grandmother and a step-great grandmother. Yes her new husband is that old, whereas she is only slightly older than me. But hey - age doesn't matter right.
However, the collective gasp of all the women at the vows she said was something else. I'm not sure where these vows came from - perhaps they wrote them - but he blabbed on about being the head of the house and taking responsibility for their lives and yadda yadda, which was fairly nauseating, but then in reply she vowed to be submissive and honouring and other such stuff focused on her playing number 2 to him. I kid you not! Seriously while they did the register signing I swear everyone in the room was talking about the vows in stunned and horrified tones. Why would any woman in this day and age put herself in that kind of position? I felt rather sick hearing her say those words.
Mind you my other sister in law sidled up to me when the photographs were being taken and commented 'so much for being submissive' as my s-i-l bossed everyone around, including her new husband.
Ah well, I hope she's happy with him. What is it they say about making beds and lying in them?
