Caviar was a huge disappointment. From the moment Vala had heard of the expensive stuff she’d wanted to try it. It had to be something really delicious, right? Why else would it be so expensive and desirable? She loved the festive bubbling wine that went along with it. But her first mouthful of caviar got spit out into her napkin. It was nothing but fishy salt. However, the main course lobster lived up to its advance billing, and the lovely bubbling wine was heavenly with it, so overall the foray into fine dining was a success. (Sam finished Vala’s caviar)
Coconut tastes like grass. Why on, well, on Earth, would anyone want to eat that? It’s certainly not necessary to scrape the bottom of the barrel to find things to eat for dessert, because there is always chocolate, unlike in some benighted parts of the galaxy she’s been stuck in. (Teal’c finished Vala’s coconut cream pie)
Snails are slimy little crawly things that exist on many other planets, but Vala has never been aware of anyone actually eating them. She’d have to be

Her brother picked on her for being a fussy eater and her mother catered to her being a fussy eater and her father looked down on her for being a fussy eater, and that’s what she was, what she still is. A fussy eater.
Sam can’t stand Jell-O unless it’s blue.
She can’t stand cookies unless they’re homemade.
She can’t stand margarine, it has to be butter.
Peas are good, carrots are fine, but she can’t stand peas & carrots.
She can’t stand potatoes without gravy, pie without ice cream, peanut butter without jelly.
Sam is a fussy eater. And these days Daniel picks on her and Teal’c caters to her and she’s very much afraid that the Colonel looks down on her. But she is what she has always been. A fussy eater.

I was the fussy eater in my family. But when I got out into the real world I found out I wasn't really that fussy at all! It was just that my parents would eat anything.

My mom grew up in the Great Depression, and she would tell of how they had $1/day to feed 8 people. They grew their own vegetables, I'm sure. Secondarily, she overcooked EVERYTHING, especially the vegies. Third, no matter what was given to us by neighborhood fishermen or hunters...she made *something* out of it and insisted it all be eaten up

1. Daniel can't stand fish of any kind or description. No tuna, no shrimp, nothing with crawly legs that scuttles across the ocean floor, no salmon or squid or cod or mussels or anything, no matter how much anyone tries to cajole him into just one bite or persuade him of the utter deliciousness he's missing out on. He doesn't care. The best times of his life have been when he's lived in the middle of the desert with no bodies of water nearby and therefore no having to make fish a part of his diet

Between #3 and #1 I'm thinking of the line in the Christine Lavin song about how eating sushi is like chewing on your own cheek. *g*

I like Sam viewing honeydew melon as a betrayal.
Oh, Vala.
