Father's Day

Jun 21, 2010 00:21

On Father's Day I went with my grandfather in his big turquoise blue car to Mister Donut to get donuts for breakfast. Mister Donut was my dad's favorite breakfast/drug of choice. I was jumping up and down in my little white shoes, excited to get my favorite donut- raised glazed toasted coconut.

The man behind the counter called him "Chief." And he called me "Pocahontas." I asked my grandfather who Pocohumpus was. He paid for the donuts and looked at the man, although speaking to me. "She was a slave."

I looked at the man and said, "But I don't want to be a slave."

He looked really nervous. My grandfather said in his accented English, "That's ok, Princesa, when you grow up you can buy this store and fire him."

"Or he can be my donut slave!" I said.

Don't want to waste the talent. Mister Donut made a mean raised glazed toasted coconut.

Although they did many things that really hurt me over the years, I am grateful for my father and grandfather, who never let me believe that I was Pocohumpus.

I miss them.
