What ever happened to true records

Apr 15, 2007 22:52

Reading through the BBC website (as I do often... usually when I should be doing something else, which is the case at the moment) I've caught sight of a couple of articles that has given me reason to have a little bit of a rant.

Okay, the concept of world records, as usually associated with Guinness, is something I can remember having at home and reading through on many occasions when bored. So, records such as the height of the tallest man, weight of the heaviest mammal, and the speed of the fastest jet, were all things I knew about. These are records, getting a faster jet, for example, would be a feat of engineering that would be worthy of notice.

So, we come forwards to April 2007 and two news articles catch my eye regarding world records. That would be the largest collection of people dressed up as Robin Hood and the largest simultaneous spacehopper hop. If you're interested these are 165 and over 600 respectively.

I would just ask you to consider one thing. Why?
