From an e-mail I sent to my good friend Dan Pfleegor this afternoon:
"Is it wrong that I feel more comfortable at an Applebees than a hole-in-the-wall joint? It's not that I don't appreciate the hard-work of independent entrepreneurs, but I can't fathom their insistence of allowing their work to become their life and the creepy friendliness on display at every Ma 'n Pop joint. I kind of prefer the stale, phoned-in concern of a major chain, uptown, because I relate to it. I know what it feels like to work for a company you don't care for and to come home and think nothing of it. There's nothing idealistic about that at all, and I deeply appreciate the lack of enthusiasm brought forth by those still stuck in the suburbs. It's refreshing."
Poor writing aside, what I'm trying to say is that I think we put too much effort in the way we brand ourselves sometimes that we forget that no one has to be that strong or cool or concerned with what they eat or where the work as long as they are eating and working and not taking those things too seriously.
Either that or I just think culture is a big waste of time.
