ok.. getting carded.. is a plus.. means you don't look old
but not accepting a passport, visa, or uk license is simply the clerk being dimwitted

however.. this is probably a good taste of the moronicity of America..
if it can be made more difficult..
if it can be made more problematic..
if it can be twisted and taxed..

America will do it :-D

" Perhaps this reflects the American obsession with biometrics. Height is about the only measurement that I would trust a service person to take correctly. I wonder if they have to keep a tape measure behind the counter for verification purposes..."

America is obscenely obsessed with height..
tall is good appearantly
and most stores that sell liquor (and pretty much every convieniance store/gas station) has the height markers on the entry so that a teller can give a proper estimation of a perpatrators height if they should be robbed (and not killed)

30 isn't too old though.. you don't look it
me.. I'm 31.. turning 32.. I feel 50.. feel like I'm turning 58
I feel like sitting in a rocking chair and throwing rocks at the young whipper-snapper rapscallions that walk on my lawn as I say 'back in my day..'

Nix
p.s. perhaps the store people simply misunderstood you.. after awhile and you acclimate a little more.. try speaking American.. less English

full sentance structure and multi-syllibic words confuse most Americans
also try grunting and pointing.. as this is also a form of communication here
