I am so beyond fed up with livejournal at this point. Instead of taking responsibility for the thoughtlessness of their actions, they continue to attack the very things that I love about fandom: the gray areas, the extremes, the freedom to agree and disagree and co-exist, even when we disapprove of each other. The unabashed expressions of female sexuality, both romantic and purely carnal.
Now those that fail to live up some arbitrary group's definition of "artistic merit," those who take pleasure in sexual art work and writing purely for its own sake without balancing it among "more serious themes" will be punished. Their paid accounts will be revoked without warning; the thoughts, art and interactions the accounts contain destroyed.
And finally, as I cannot fail to obsesses about, women will be punished for writing about and drawing younger looking men in sexual situations while eighty year old men rent "Barely Legal #73" or "Don't Let Daddy Know #29" from me everyday at work (both if it's Monday - Wednesday and they get the two for one senior discount.) Don't get me wrong, I am a firm believer in the freedom of fantasy and every person's right to do their thing as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. But Livejournal's decision to single out and censor fandom's overwhelmingly female created and consumed erotic works makes me rather bitter; mostly when I'm renting out piles of porno to straight males who don't HAVE to fight the companies that host the movies they enjoy (I am completely polite and respectful to these customers, I maintain a professional attitude even when their tastes in adult movies personally turn my stomach; something that livejournal so far seems unable to do) while we battle LJ just for a clear explanation of what their hosting policies are.
Anyway, just a few more interesting links and then I'll wander off to stew in my own rage.
Nice recap of the whole debacle and some suggestions on how to express your displeasure with livejoural
here.
Yeah, livejournal will delete your account without warning if you post something sexual about possible minors who are FICTIONAL CHARACTERS but they won't even
suspend pro-anorexia communities which could end up killing real people. And don't think people haven't reported these communicates and the
behaviors they encourage. Livejournal just
doesn't care.
Fascinating information about the
legality of deleting journals under retroactively altered terms of service. Um, as in, it's illegal under California law.
Obvious question that livejournal has STILL FAILED TO ANSWER. Why can't they just take down the "offensive" material or warn users about them without deleting whole accounts? Because that's just too easy!
blue_soaring reveals the full extent to which livejournal has attempted to
obliterate the "offenders" from fandom's memory. It's truly dispicable.
Some interesting thoughts about Brad leaving livejournal and what it means for fandom, along with further examinations of LJ's "legal" reasoning,
here. (Extra points for the use of a Calvin and Hobbes comic to prove a political point. Approved.)
Absolutely fascinating post about chan and free speech
here. As TBQ put it “It always amazes me how people don't seem to get that we don't need to push for freedom of expression on the stuff we like. 'cause if we all agreed on it then it wouldn't need protection now would it?” Amen.
And finally, file a
rip off report against Six Apart. Come on, you know you want to.
Ok, I'm going to step away from the computer for a bit before I physically implode from WTF. Carry on Fandom, both in the intelligent and eloquent arguments you've presented in
lj_biz (which livejournal has either completely ignored or purposefully misunderstood) and in spamming the holy hell out of
news. Seriously, no pity guys. They have it coming.
