They had met inside a Starbucks. Both of them had been hurriedly cruising for one of the rare free armchairs. They had sat down at the same moment, in the two armchairs opposite of each other with a little fake antique sidetable between them. Carson had carried a paper bag which clanged as he let it drop underneath the table, hinting at contents made out of metal. Rodney had carried a muffin. A citrus-free cherry streusel muffin.

They had smiled at each other, both of them kind of proud for having managed to grab a comfortable seat. The barista had brought their coffees, Carson had snagged up one of the more interesting magazines out of the rack behind him, Rodney had been paged two times, Carson defending his seat for him six times during his trips to the public phone next to the facilities.

Two and a half hours later, after the rain had receded, Carson went home, the stranger in front of him forgotten as soon as he left the coffee house.

They had met up again inside a full bus which was on its way to the central station - neither man had noticed. After that, Rodney had seen Carson once in a club accompanied by a rather beautiful brunette woman, and he had stared at him with a look that spoke of puzzled recognition.

The next time they met was short of five months later. It was summer but the day had not been unbearable hot. Both of them had been hurriedly cruising for one of the rare free armchairs inside their favourite Starbucks. They had sat down at the same moment, in the two armchairs opposite of each other with a little fake Jugendstil sidetable between them.

"You! You! Err, Karsten... something!" Rodney had exclaimed and had pointed at Carson, who had looked rather confused. "Do we know each other?" "Yes! No! Well, not really. We were here before at ...that table over there!" Carson had frowned but then his expression had cleared up as he remembered. "You were the guy I had to talk with two obnoxious Boy George fans for. Yeah." "I'm very sorry. Dr. Rodney McKay." "Dr. Carson Beckett"

Both of them had settled again into their seats after having shaken hands. "Doctor of what field exactly?"

They had spent over five hours inside that Starbucks that summer day talking to each other. Rodney had ignored his pager for Carson three times and after they had been shooed out of the then closing coffee shop, they had chosen to walk through almost deserted streets.

Then there were a few immensely awkward moments of cliched flirting in front of a museum where they sat on the stairs and their first, second, third and fourth kiss was shared.
