I am very sad today

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. died today at the age of 84.

I never grieved the passing of an author like this. I just missed getting to see him at the Mark Twian house two years ago and knew I'd blown my last chance. I'm reading Breakfast of Champions today so I can remember him and smile. The biting humor that blankets the grave seriousness of that book is the defining reason why I think it's important to remember Kurt: some people would tell you that there's a time to be serious and a time to be silly. Kurt made us beg the question over and over again, "Why can't you just do both and save some of the energy of doing them separately?"

Goodbye old friend and thanks so much for all those great conversations. Thank God there are transcripts of each and every one.
