Wednesday Reading Meme

Sep 07, 2022 20:08

I am soooo far behind on everything. Haven't had the chance to look at my flist in so long. Hope to get caught up on the weekend. For now, it's the Wednesday Reading Meme.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since last Wednesday I got back into the reading swing of things and read 3 books: Billy Summers by Stephen King, SeinLanguage by Jerry Seinfeld, and The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune. Reviews of all of these below.

What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm currently about halfway through The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty. I'm mostly enjoying it so far.

What I'm Planning To Read Next: Let's see. I've got 3 books waiting for pick up at the library, 4 more in transit, and one ebook that I am 6th in line for. Among the 3 waiting to be picked up are the two next in line for Chet & Bernie and what I think is a vampire serial killer. I'll just have to see what I'm in the mood for, but I admit I'm leaning toward a little vampirism. That'll probably all change when I see the other books. I'm like Chet with Slim Jims when it comes to Chet & Bernie!

84. Billy Summers by Stephen King

It’s the assassin who only kills bad guys trope done King-style. Billy’s latest assignment (and also the big ol’ last one before he hangs up his gun and leaves it all behind) involves embedding in an average neighbourhood, where he breaks the rules and makes friends. There’s also a story within a story, as Billy’s alias is a writer working on his first autobiographical book. This results in a little of a disjointed story, because it really does feel as though King should have made Billy’s backstory its own book for a different character. Still, it’s a solid 4 stars because King is just that good.

85. SeinLanguage by Jerry Seinfeld

I came across this at a little free library in my neighbourhood and thought it might be an interesting read. I was expecting an autobiography, but this is just a series of short anecdotal jokes from Jerry’s standup routine. On the plus side, quite a few of them are still humorous. On the negative side, I also remember hearing a lot of them before. And if I can still remember a bunch of these and I haven’t watched Seinfeld in years, I can only imagine that people who bought this at the height of his fame must have been supremely disappointed.

86. The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

Linus is a meek and mild employee at the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, whose honesty in his reports inspires his superiors to send him to investigate the island home of six magical children under the care of a gentleman named Arthur who has secrets of his own. The children include Chauncey, a green tentacled blob-like creature whose great and endearing goal in life is to become a bellhop; a wyvern named Theodore; Sal, who turns into a pomeranian when startled; and oh yes, the antichrist.

And I am having a hard time expressing how *wonderful* it all is. The children come beautifully to life and the reader’s preconceptions about them fade along with Linus’s as he breaks all the rules and becomes emotionally invested in this little found family. There are, of course, many parallels to the prejudices of our times (and all times) but ultimately this is a touching and beautiful story that will make you smile and warm your heart. You will love them all *but especially Chauncey* :D
