Wednesday Reading Meme

Jul 27, 2022 11:03

I completely forgot about this last week, so here's two weeks' worth of updates.

What I Just Finished Reading: Since the last update I read Paw and Order by Spencer Quinn, A Day Like This by Kelley McNeil, A Street Cat Named Bob by James Bowen, The Quiet People by Paul Cleave (all reviewed previously), State of Decay by James Knapp and The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikwawa (both reviewed below).

What I'm Reading Right Now: I'm loving An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good by Helene Tursten

What I Plan To Read Next: A Stephen King duo is up next: Gwendy's Button Box and (finally) Billy Summers.

71. State of Decay by James Knapp

In the near-ish future, there’s a drastic divide between first and third tier citizens in a society where the dead can be revived and controlled. Nico is an FBI agent investigating an illegal shipment of revivors, and his case ends up being entangled with that of a cop investigating a serial killer, a woman with unusual powers, and a third-tier cage fighter. It’s quite a dense plot with some interesting worldbuilding and a bit of a twist I didn’t see coming, and the non-traditional zombies take a back seat to figuring out the mystery. I enjoyed the hints to Nico’s past. This is the first of a trilogy and I will definitely be continuing on with the story.

72. The Traveling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa

Satoru travels throughout Japan attempting to find a home for his cat, Nana, whom he can no longer take care of. During their travels, we learn a bit of Saturo’s history through flashbacks to his school days, while the current timeframe is sometimes narrated by Nana. The prose is quite simple and straightforward, but somewhere along the way I became invested in a good man and his loyal companion and friend, and I even found myself moved to tears at one point. Definitely a different style of writing, but one that captured my heart in the end.
