Um. Help please?

So the computer died again this morning. I manage to breathe life back into it, but da-yum. I can feel the grey hairs sprouting.

I did a quick look online to try to get some idea of prices and such, and I'm so hopelessly lost. Can any computer savvy people on my flist help me out ( Read more... )

Thank you SO much for responding. I was trying to research but a) I hate research and b) hating research makes it hard for me to do it, and most importantly c) I still didn't understand 65% of what was said.

I suck (and not...), I truly do.

I currently have an HP and would never get one again. Not only does it break down every six months, but the repair dude told me that HP makes their computers so that only their components fit them, and their components cost more. Do you know if Compaq is the same?

I do plan to buy instore.

Thanks again!

I think extended warranty is definitely the way to go. *nods*

Okay girl, put on that geek hat!

Okay, laptop vs. desktop. Aside from the obvious "can lug laptop wherever you go", what are the advantages? I would definitely need to get a wireless mouse. They seem to have the same RAM, HD, etc. I don't understand how wireless works -- I have an external modem. And um, wireless at a hot spot? (I know what a hotspot is, but other than that... *shrugs*)

Aaaah, a router. Okay. That actually sounds quite simple. I really really really want to go with a laptop this time, but they do seem pricier and then there's the router cost.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my really basic questions. You rock.

I have no idea what your price range is but if you want to go with a laptop, I'd suggest Lenovo.

I adore my Z61m.

Thanks... I checked but they're way over my price range. Thanks though!

but the repair dude told me that HP makes their computers so that only their components fit them, and their components cost more.

*laughs* He didn't! The graphics card in that HP is the same chipset as the graphics card in a Dell or Acer or even an ASUS retail card that I can go and buy at my local geek shop. It uses the same driver. It plugs into the same PCIe slot. The intel i945 or i965 chipset is the very same chipset from board to board. A MSI motherboard is a MSI motherboard. An ASUS is an ASUS, etc. Memory can be tricky but it's still just memory.

Now, I have seen HP cripple motherboards by removing slots, say removing an AGP slot from a i945 mobo so that you can only use the onboard graphics and you can't step up the graphics. That's true but that's not the same as using proprietary components ( ... )

Probably I am using the word "components" incorrectly. He said, it has something to do with the amount of screws (or whatever attachs certain pieces). That HP ones are made with a different number so some things don't fit. *shrugs*

The rest of your answer... pretty much gobbledygook to me. But thank you for responding, all the same. :)
