Baking, or Things I Learned Today

Well. I can either curse, or I can look upon this day as a learning experience. Let's go with the latter.

Things I Learned Today

1. Do not bake anything from a mix. Such attempts will always go wrong in some fashion. ABORT THE CUPCAKES, ABORT!

2. While cookies made by rolling out the dough and cutting them into cool shapes sounds fun, in ( Read more... )

2. While cookies made by rolling out the dough and cutting them into cool shapes sounds fun, in reality it is simply mucky and the dough sticks to the roller even when you use flour and it won't spread and then all the dough just goes in the garbage. So really, don't do that ever again.

The dough for that has to be quite cold, so even if you really chill it the way you have to, in this weather it's probably not going to work. There's a reason you mostly see those for winter holidays.

Thank you so much for that VERY educational post! These lessons reinforced the wonderful tidbits I learned as I tried to self-teach throughout the years. I received my final Bachelor's in Bakeology when I confessed that I was totally unskilled at baking. While I can cook quite well, my baking skills are a null set, therefore...

I have the names of several wonderful bakeries that I have enlisted over the years so as not to disappoint my family on special occasions, including school bake sales. LOL

My guess is that you are far more gifted than I and are just the perfect candidate for baking the old fashioned way...from scratch.

Darn, now I want a homemade cookie. I guess I'll have to hit my bakery later. LOL

You know, I used to be a kick-ass baker. Can't cook at ALL, but as a baker I was the bomb, baby. Apparently these skills atrophy without constant use. :/

(Still, my specialty chocolate-chip-banana muffins turned out PERFECT. Bwah.)

My guess is that you're still an outstanding baker with a lot less time. Time constraints can screw anything up.

P.S. I would totally ship you some home-made cookies and muffins next time I make 'em. I'll have to check to see if we're allowed to do that from Canada...

ABORT THE CUPCAKES, ABORT! ROFLMAO! I just have this image in my head of lights flashing and sirens going off in your kitchen. :D

And rolled cookies look cute, but are a bitch to make. :| I try to only do that once a year.

Sorry to hear about your kitchen misadventures, even if I was amused by them. Have fun at the concert!

*nods* And the female-computer-voice calmly saying, "Mayday. Mayday. Cupcakes will combust in exactly 30 seconds. Please vacate the area. Mayday. Mayday."

I plan to have lots of fun tonight to make up for my disastrous Thursday! :p

You could always take mix cooking lessons from me. :P (you probably shouldn't though.)

Also, Splenda is disgusting.

I take it you are not exactly a whiz in the kitchen. We would be perfect together. Heh.

Hehe, well, I think if I put my mind to it, I could probably be okay.

Yuck...sounds like a very not-fun day. I love to cook and enjoy making up new dishes and experimenting, but baking is such an exact *science* that it's much more complicated. The only time I really make an effort to bake anything is Christmas, when I make plates of cookies for co-workers. I always try to block out the experience so I'm not terrified to do it the next year. :o)

Really, the only things I can bake easily are breads (because I grew up making them) and pies (because they're so pretty I can't help but make them). Cakes, cupcakes, & muffins *scare* me.

Also, I totally agree about the Splenda. I bought some juice made with Splenda because I was feeling a little guilty about the high-fructose corn syrup in the "fruit juice" I always drink, and it just tastes wrong. I'd be too scared to bake with it.

Oh, the thing is, I totally LOVE baking. Can't cook at all. I think I will stick with the tried-and-true recipes that I know from now on. The drop cookies and muffins turned out GREAT. If I do say so myself. Heh.

Splenda is supposed to be made for baking. I wanted to do some batches with it coz my mom is diabetic, so at least she can taste the stuff now. But yeah, I don't think I'll repeat that. Grrr.
